After Burner

Commodore 64 - 1989
Also available on: Amiga

Hokay, for those of you who haven't seen it in the arcades and missed the Megapreview a couple of issues ago, Afterburner goes like this: launch your F-14 Tomcat from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, zoom along at Mach 96 and shoot the marauding hordes of Russi... sorry, enemy aircraft who scoot around taking pot-shots at you, stopping for refuelling occasionally.

Nothing frighteningly original there, I know, but where Afterburner excels is in the graphics. Even on the Speccy conversion, the speed at which sprites are wanged around the screen is phenomenal, especially considering that as your F-14 banks, the ground and all the clobber littered about on it bank too, so all the sprites have to be rotated around. The mathematics behind it doesn't bear thinking about. But then what maths does? As you can probably imagine, colour pretty well goes out of the window once again, making me wonder where the Spectrum got its name.

Well fast it may be. So fast that you'll often be wiped out without knowing what's hit you. The trouble is, though, that there's very little to do. Your guns fire automatically, missiles lock on as soon as your sights pass over the target, so all you have to do really is dodge enemy fire and launch the odd missile now and then.

Overall, a fun game, if a little too easy and repetitive.

To all people saying this is mislabeled, all ports of After Burner for home computers are in fact actually based on After Burner II.
These were all originally released on store shelves as After Burner, mostly because the original After Burner was never really as popular as After Burner II, only containing 18 levels instead of the 23 of II.

Works great! It's also nice to find the controls very intuitive so I don't have to find a manual or search the keyboard for some obscure buttons to fire and fly. Thanks.

I've tried dozens of games in the browser but the majority seem to fail. They get to load screens or option screens and no keys work. unable to choose ie: VGA and continue, or unable to use mouse cursor (even though i have it to not hide)

DosBox 0.74 - Win7 (64bit) - Works Great

Appears to be version 1 to me... dated 1989.. nothing says Afterburner 2 in the game I that I saw.

Gameplay? I love this type of game but I couldn't bear this game because things come into view to fast - it's not clear due to lack of depth when you actually hit something or not - it's just - I dunno. I was HOPING I liked it a lot - JETS, FLYING, BLOWING STUFF UP! Wah Hoo - Gameplay didn't pan out as I had hoped.

Others might love it - I'm not knocking it - just I didn't find it as fun as I thought it would be... like the arcade version which was awesome of course! :) Also unfair comparison - if you ever played in the arcade - it was actual flying footage with the game (planes etc) overlayed on it - so was very innovative.

This is "After Burner II", not the 1st game "Afterburner". I haven't found the first game from 1988 yet.
