Taking Screenshots and Sending Them to Us

/ Taking screenshots

Many games on MyAbandonware do not have screenshots. They let visitors see a game before the download, and they help people find a game from their childhood by browsing our pages.

Most of the time, we use the screenshots kindly provided by MobyGames, but they do not have screenshots for every game or every platform of a game. We are looking for screenshots from our visitors.

If you wish to help us, take screenshots and send them to us with the steps below.

Windows Games: ShareX

For Windows games, use ShareX, a free and open source screenshot tool. Its Auto capture mode takes a screenshot at a fixed interval while you play, so you do not have to press a key at the right time.

After you install ShareX, these shortcuts work everywhere:

  • Print Screen: capture the full screen;
  • Alt + Print Screen: capture the active window, for example the game window;
  • Ctrl + Print Screen: capture a region you select with the mouse.

ShareX saves the files in Documents\ShareX\Screenshots, in one folder for each month.

Our advice: use Auto capture. In the ShareX main window, click Capture, then Auto capture.... Select the game window or a region, set the Repeat time (let's say 15 seconds), then click Start. Play the game for some minutes, stop the capture, and keep the best screenshots: the title screen, the menus, and different stages of the game.

If you get black screenshots, play the game in a window instead of fullscreen.

DOS Games: DOSBox Staging

DOSBox Staging takes a screenshot with Ctrl + F5 on Windows and Linux, and with Cmd + F5 on macOS. Press the two keys at the same time, starting with Ctrl or Cmd.

By default, DOSBox Staging saves an upscaled image, about 1200 pixels high. We prefer the raw image too: it has the real resolution of the game. Add these lines to your configuration file to save both at each capture:

[capture] default_image_capture_formats = upscaled raw

DOSBox Staging saves the screenshots in a capture folder, in the folder you start it from. To use another folder, set capture_dir in the same [capture] section. The DOSBox Staging manual has all the options.

The original DOSBox also uses Ctrl + F5 and saves into a capture folder.

Other Emulators

Many emulators have their own screenshot command. For example, ScummVM uses Alt + S, and saves into the screenshot folder set in its options. Read the help of your emulator to find the command and the folder.

On Windows, ShareX works with every emulator: use Auto capture on the emulator window, as for a Windows game.

On a Mac, press Cmd + Shift + 4, release the keys, press Space and click the emulator window. macOS saves the screenshot on the desktop.
