Alice: An Interactive Museum

Windows 3.x - 1994
Also available on: Mac

How to Play

Windows 3.x

Notes:

  • The game was originally released in 1991 in Japan, only for Macintosh systems; in 1994 the game had a new release for Windows 3.x & Mac systems. Windows 3.x variant should work fine on Windows 95 & 98 systems too. The best way to play the game on modern systems is to use Virtual Machine with old Windows, like DOSBox + Windows 3.1 or PCEm + Windows 95. If the in-game animations work too fast, reduce the clock speed to no more than 4x to see the animations at their correct speed
  • If you don't know how to configure Virtual Machine, you can use the custom installer by TheCollectionChamber which includes pre-configured DOSBox & the game in one package

How to get this running in DOSBOX on the Windows 3.1 release on Modern Windows:

You will need to mount the cdrom to the D drive because the launcher is expecting data to be on the D drive. You will need the filepath location for that iso and I would recommend that you put this in the configuration file, sorry if you already had stuff there for other games...

To get to the configuration file to go your dosbox install location and run the options batch file, its the easiest way I feel. Once it opens the conf file in notepad scroll to the bottom where it says "You can put your MOUNT lines here" and type this:

imgmount D "[filepath].iso" -t cdrom

For instance it might look something like this:

imgmount D "C:\Games\Win31\Alice\Alice-An-Interactive-Museum_Win-3x_EN_Win3x0-release\Alice-In\cd\Alice.iso" -t cdrom

And you can even use that exact filepath if you extract the zip file to "C:\Games\Win31" because within the win3x release there is a folder called Alice-In and inside that folder there is a cd folder that contains that iso.

This will change the directory to the windows folder then launch windows.

Here is an example of what your conf file might look like under [autoexec]:

imgmount D "C:\Games\Win31\Alice\Alice-An-Interactive-Museum_Win-3x_EN_Win3x0-release\Alice-In\cd\Alice.iso" -t cdrom

Once you have that configured you can launch your alice game folder in dos box and you should see in the prompt that it mounted that folder to the D drive. What I do is I just drag the folder to the desktop icon and that actually will mount that folder as the c drive for you but it does it AFTER the commands in the dosbox conf file so you can't do the next step in the conf file UNLESS it mounts that folder as the C drive FIRST which you could also program it to do..

Once you are in dosbox and you can see its mounted the C and D drives correctly you need to launch windows. so type these two commands:

cd windows
win

once you do that you should get the windows desktop and the Synergy Folder should already be open. Now all you have to do is double click the rabbit. There are 2 rabbit icons.. If you click Alice you will start the program from the beginning. If you click Follow it will continue exactly where you left off I believe.

Final step, get immersed in the vibes~ of this wonderfully curious game from 1994, made in Macromedia. Enjoy!
