Alter Ego (Male on this page) is one of the rare games that's not only outstanding in every respect, but, like Fool's Errand, is so original in concept that it's hard to categorize.
You play your own alter ego in this game, going through life stages while making decisions that impact several characteristics, such as calmness, trustworthiness, etc., that in turn affect the number of choices you have in future situation. You might learn a surprising thing or two about yourself while playing this life simulation.
Overall, an outstanding game in every respect, and much more realistic than Maxis' recent blockbuster The Sims years later. Two thumbs up!

Great game, thank you for making it available!
However, shouldn't this sport "LIFE / SOCIAL SIMULATION" as a theme? After all, this is THE life simulation!
I just wish somebody would make a copy with the files in 360kb segments, or in my case, 720... you know, like on the original disks...
It seems there are several missing files. https://postimg.org/image/80atb9ahp7/
Here's another one https://postimg.org/image/9rr0rzh4jv/
There is a problem with one of the items. It says "NAILS.VIG" not found. It only affects that one item though, the rest works fine so far.

This game... for its time, and even now, I consider legendary. There are problems at times to be sure, it's a very old game. However, it took me for an emotional ride, made me think about a lot of aspects of my life. This game more or less allows me to 'try again', in a metaphorical sense, at the childhood that was mostly robbed from me. It brought me some tears, especially in infancy and in the old age. There is a lot of insight in this game. I love it.
Enjoying this game so far, it's very well written and I've already been told off by the narrative as others mentioned below.
I did actually come up against a couple of problems, which I'm not sure if these are unique to running DOSBOX on Linux.
Firstly, DOSBOX was complaining in the background about being unable to write to 'SIDEICON.GPH'. After looking at the permissions of all the files in the directory they're all read-only so I set everything to read/write to avoid any possilble complains with other files later on. To do this, when in the Alter Ego directory (in your Linux terminal, not the DOSBOX ons), issue the command chmod 666 *
Secondly, when trying to save the game (I had to work out how to do this by essentially bashing at the keyboard to try and work out how to do it. Turns out it's CTRL+S), there are already some saves in there, I was unable to write my save to any of these entries.
These saves are read from the OLDGAMES file, which I deleted and was able to save my game just fine after that.
To load your game just hit CTRL+L.
I absolutely love Alter Ego. Been playing it since last year I believe.
It is a very fun game. I agree with Abelius, sometimes the game punishes you for nothing, but I don't care. Alter Ego actually helped me become a better person. I am female myself, but I have played both versions (M/F) and they are really cool!
Some scenes are very creepy and sad. For example.
(SPOILER) There is a scene where you are playing alone and a guy pulls over telling you he's a police officer and stuff. If you believe him, you end up dead because he kills you.
I is a very interesting game, but sometimes is really frustrating. It seems like if the guy who developed the game was more interested at tricking you into selecting an answer that he doesn't approve of to simply mock you and reduce some of you stats. In most cases those are fair punishments, but in other cases he is completely wrong, Phd. or not. :-P
But overall, a sim you need to play to have a different experience.
this game is actually fun.
Amazing journey.
