From Brian Moriarty's tribute to Dani Bunten: "A final title for Electronic Arts broke even more new ground. 1988's Modem Wars was the first game released by a major publisher to support modem-to-modem multiplay. A futuristic synthesis of toy soldiering and football, Modem Wars was a technical tour de force, offering a surprisingly brisk interactive experience within the severe constraints of 1200-baud modems. Many of the latency and synchronization challenges faced by today’s network game engineers were solved first by Modem Wars." Two thumbs up!

Loved this game. I had the privilege to test Dan Bunten's later game, Global Conquest. It was a fun game...but nothing on the scale of Modem Wars.
Game is playable single-player via AI "trainer" opponent that is actually pretty decent. You have various mechs, and you can return them to a recycler to scrap them or repair them in order to keep your forces up. Game was pretty fun back in the day.

I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing modem wars! This game also gave us ideas for other games.
