Mortal Kombat II

DOS - 1994

How often is the sequel better than the original? And what comprises to such a sequel’s success? It’s usually expanding on the original idea and adding a few bells and whistles, a few knick-knacks that will allow the recipients to engross themselves even more in what they loved so much.

MK2 is a prime example of an expansion of the original idea. Twelve kombatants, some returning from the original game, each story expanded upon, each one given special moves and Fatalities and new finishing moves (Friendship and Babality!).

The story starts right after MK1, after Earthrealm’s win of the tournament, whereby all of the kombatants are taken into Outworld, the domain of Shao Kahn (and where Goro from the original game comes from). Shang Tsung, given another chance and his youth back by Shao Kahn tries to take revenge on the Earthrealm heroes, having recruited some new allies and having lured the kombatants into outworld, thus gaining home court advantage… The game takes every single thing from the original and makes it better. The movement, the stages (the Screaming Forest!), stage fatalities, stories, there’s no one stone left unturned! As with the original, there are a couple secrets hidden in the game, too (Jade, Smoke and Noob Saibot). It’s an overall example of what a sequel should be and how to spend money to make things better, as opposed to milking a franchise with no innovation, so transparent in today’s game development (Batman: Arkham series, anyone?).

Countless hours spent practising and perfecting the special moves and fatalities have given a lot of people muscle memory - yours truly, after picking up the game having not played it for about 10-12 years performed a fatality on the first try, playing Sub Zero.

All in all, Mortal Kombat 2 could be considered the best of the franchise, having given it so many new fans, since the game was ported onto a great many gaming systems, with certain gore-y sequences taken out from some, due to, you guessed it, the game’s bloody and macabre visuals as well as its predecessor’s-driven act to rate games, as well as just reaffirming their fans: “We’re here to stay, we’re building up and this will not be our last word”. Congratulations to the developers, they had a plan and followed through perfectly… the game deserves all the praise it ever got and more!

if you're downloading this make sure you also download its manual or you'll be lost. here are a few of important buttons
F10 = Settings, F1 = player 1 Start, F2 = player 2 Start
make sure you go to the setting and activate the sound choose the right sound card, I recommend that you set a DOS machine using PCem with soundblaster 16, it works great you can even play on a gamepad thanks to PCem

Game doesn't work. Loads up to the title screen but no sound. The only buttons that respond are x and down arrow on the number pad. And all that does is take you to the high score list.

It`s only a demo.. I can`t play a game. It shows you the intro and some fighting, but how do I play? It doesn`t respond to any key.
