An okay conversion of Taito's lesser-known arcade game of the same name. There is not much more I can say about Renegade-- the game will be familiar to anyone who has spent numerous quarters on Double Dragon or earlier Bad Dudes: up to 2 players control 2 wannabe gangsters as they fight wave after wave of baddies.
A Double Dragon clone in almost every respect, down to similar level design. Blocky graphics and limited moves makes it an inferior clone that is worth checking out for perhaps a few minutes, or just to watch the demo that shows some of the later (still boring) levels. That's it, really-- an average game in every sense of the word.

What does this have to do with phony?
The closest thing I had to double dragon on the C64 at the time.
Some things about the HOTUD review:
Renegade is not a Double Dragon clone. In fact, Double Dragon is a posterior game of the same company, and a direct spiritual successor of it, improving the Renegade/Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun fight system. The Double Dragon 2 fight system is an homage to Renegade's one, using again how punch/kick buttons works on that game.
Double Dragon exists thanks to Renegade/Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun. The real game is Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun, who was modified and adapted to the occidental players changing graphics and ambientation from school japanese gangs to more occidental street criminal gangs.
I think that is a very good beat'em up game, one of the best of their time.
