Return of the Phantom

DOS - 1993

Investigate strange accidents at the Paris Opera House that mimic the crimes of the notorious Phantom of the Opera.

Matt reduces the puzzle's difficulty considerably (perhaps in response to some player's criticisms that some puzzles in Rex Nebular were too unforgiving). The result is a game full of easy puzzles and a boring maze. Definitely the weakest of Matt's games, and disappointingly short.

The game with nice story and atmosphere and relatively good puzzles but a bit mundane due to slowliness and need to traverse through the same locations all over again with not many things to do in them. However, it is worth to give it a try - in particular when you have a CD version with all the spoken dialogues.

One of the best Microprose games to be released with a great theme and excellent story. Played this one several times back when it was new but my copy would always freeze right as you opened the sarcophagus right after the labyrinth and I could never finish the game. It's definitely worth checking out if you like a great time travel/mystery game and a fan of The Phantom of the Opera. Seek out the CD version for full voice acting.

This game was a real surprise for me. I found it very enjoyable and really liked it's storytelling qualities and the way it mixed the original Phantom of the Opera of Gaston Leroux with it's own story. I also liked the whole graphical design, everything is very consistent and has it's own distinct style. Last but not least: The soundtrack is - even if repetitive - brillant - especially if you use MT-32-emulation - and perfectly supports the atmosphere of this mysterious and creepy tale. One caveat: Towards the end of the game the designers somehow felt the urge to force the player through a labyrinth. And as always in games this labyrinth is a chore to do. I'd recommend to use a walkthrough to get through it. Other than that I really enjoyed it.
