Stellar Crusade

DOS - 1988
Also available on: Amiga

Norm Koger's first game published by SSI was severely marred by a weak manual which, through SSI's "liberal" editing, deleted eleven pages of necessary information and made the game very difficult to play. Even with the documentation, this game of religious jihad on an intergalactic scale is tedious and fraught with imbalance gameplay. Still, it was a commendable effort, and the game's interstellar economic model was very complex for its time. Recommended, but be sure to grab the unreleased version of the manual at Norm Koger's homepage.

I played it 1989 two weeks in the ATARI ST version.
I wanted to win the game level “hideous” with not a single ship lost.
I accomplished this, otherwise I would have continued to try.

I played it a few times on my Amiga. I enjoyed it but I only played it a few times. Definitely play with the Spares turned on. It was a bit tedious but if you’ve done the grind on any MMO, SC is nothing compared to that.

One aspect not mentioned is the ability to design your own ships. It’s cool to be able to build your own anti ispace destroyers, command “Ageis” ships and dedicated missile cruisers.

Great game with an awesome economic model. By the time you get to full-scale war, the game has already been decided, but that doesn't take away from the real challenge.

One thing: Be sure to turn all the options on, otherwise the game is gets wildly imbalanced (too easy). For example, you can turn off option that your fleet requires a steady stream of spare parts, which makes the maintenance of worlds much simpler to manage and arguably less tedious. But since the opponent will be spending a substantial amount of his economy on maintenance, and a substantial amount of his transport units stocking star systems, it gives you an insurmountable economic advantage.

If I remember correctly, spares might even be turned off by default because it makes the game so much more complex. But the pleasure of this game is its complexity, so turn them on.

I loved this game when I was 13. Now it provided fun for 2 or 3 playthroughs, but it really is a limited game, fun, but once you understand the games systems, rather easy.
