The Seven Cities of Gold

Commodore 64 - 1984
Also available on: Amiga - Apple II - Atari 8-bit

From Brian Moriarty's tribute to Dani Bunten: "Seven Cities of Gold was a solid commercial triumph.

It brought together real-time action, strategy and exploration in a historical adventure with a genuine smudge of educational value. In fact, the much-despised term "edutainment" was originally coined to describe this game. With sales of 150,000 copies across several platforms and numerous design awards, Seven Cities catapulted Ozark into the ranks of the elite developers; and nobody complained about the fact that it was designed for only a single player."

Note: the 1993 remake called "commemorative edition" upgrades the game with VGA graphics. I still like the original much more, though, because the 1993 version simplifies the gameplay and make it much more tedious. If you are interested, this version is included in the EA Compilation Pack.

Seven Cities of Gold (7COG), Commemorative Edition, is a PC remake.

The trick to finding the hidden cities is to stop every once in awhile and give your guides a chance to tell you there is "a secret city to the north" or something like that. I've never gotten further than 90% done in this game. Did ANYONE ever finish?

I used to play this on the C64. I've only ever been able to find one lost city. Has anyone found others?

One of my favorite games on the c64 back in the 80's. You can set it to make a random world so as you sail west you have no idea what you will find. Could be one large continent or nothing but islands. I always wished for an updated version that had a few more features. I tried to get this download to work but when it asks for the map disk it runs a program asking to copy your disk. I've spent the day trying to figure out what's wrong so it will run on this c64maxi. So I'm looking for another download.

Whatever you do, Don't POP the Puba! :-) stepping into a native pops them (which is death to them) and the tribe gets angry. I can't remember which keys produced magic to calm them. You need to get close to the Chief to Trade with him (necessary). If you hit the Chief (you Pop the Puba!) and the whole tribe tries to kill your character! It's a really good game for exploring and trading in a new land. I loved this game on my Atari 800. Have fun with this game and remember Don't POP the Puba!

Only played it a bit back in the 80's, but a fun and interesting game.
