How to play Mophun games

/ How to play / Mophun games

Mophun was a games platform built into phones between 2002 and 2006, made by a Swedish company as the fast answer to Java. Its games ran real code instead of a slow interpreter, which is why they look better than anything else of their years.

We have about 220 Mophun games on My Abandonware, among them Bomb Jack, Q*bert, Worms World Party and Colin McRae Rally 04. They are small files, 12 KB to 3 MB.

Emulators

The emulator to use is the one Mophun's own makers wrote, with a modification that lets it open the games people actually bought. Nofun is the free alternative, and it is younger.

  • Mophun emulator, Tuxality mod (Windows): the official emulator of 2005 with one change that matters — it unlocks commercial games as it opens them. Get it from the Mophun project page or the copy on archive.org. Recommended.
  • Nofun (Windows, Mac, Linux): open source, built in Unity, and the only one that is still being written. It does not open locked or packed games, and the 3D ones are beyond it for now.
  • MoRePhun (Windows): a second free attempt, described by its author as experimental.

Running a game

Open the .mpn file from our zip through the emulator's Open menu, not by dragging it in, and pick the phone the game was written for.

The choice of phone is not decoration. Mophun ran on several shapes of handset and the emulator carries a profile for each: the Sony Ericsson T300 and T610, the P800 and P900, the Nokia 7650, 3650 and N-Gage, the GameTrac (the handheld that became the Gizmondo), and an Archos music player. The screen size, the keys and the speed all come from that setting, so a game started under the wrong profile can look squashed or refuse outright.

If you do not know which phone a game was made for, start with the T610 for a plain game and the P900 for one with 3D.

Locked and packed games

Commercial Mophun games were locked to the phone that bought them, and some were packed to save space. The emulator was built for developers, so out of the box it opens neither.

The Tuxality mod unlocks them as it opens them, which is the whole reason to prefer it — and it only does so through the Open menu, not by drag and drop. That is the single most common reason a game refuses for somebody who has the right emulator.

Packed games it still cannot read, and it says so: Compressed MPN files are not supported yet. Games written for Symbian and Windows Mobile phones rather than for a Mophun handset are the packed ones. A separate tool, MophunDecrypt, unpacks them; its second version added that and it is what to look for when the emulator gives you that message.

"Game expired"

Some games were sold for a month and check the date when they start. On a computer in 2026 they all think the month is over, and they say Game Expired and stop.

The date they want is written inside the file. Open the .mpn in a text editor and look for a run of digits like 20030417: that is the day the game expects. Set your computer's clock to it, start the game once, and put the clock back afterwards.

It is a stopping point rather than a failure, and it catches people who think the emulator is broken.

I need help!

We do not provide support for running abandonware games. Mophun has a small group of people who unlocked it, and they wrote down what they learned.

The Emulation General Wiki holds the version history, the list of games with known faults and the tools. Its Mophun page compares every emulator of the platform.

Checked in October 2026 against each emulator's own documentation and, where it exists, its source code. Game counts and file sizes come from our own catalogue. These guides were drafted with the help of an AI assistant and checked by hand before publishing. If something here is out of date, tell us.
