From the earliest days of computer games sports games have been popular. Primarily they offer a test of a player's precision and accuracy and, like the sports themselves, can involve physical and tactical challenges. Because of the longevity of the genre there are a significant number of games to choose from covering almost every type of sport.
The mode of play tends to differ depending on the sport portrayed. In some games a single player may be controlled, in others, a whole team with tactical choices made on the field of play.
Tournament play is another feature and events such as the Olympic Games and soccer tournaments have provided an opportunity to release numerous games in this format. Subsequent releases have followed, meaning sports games have some of the longest running franchises, such as the hugely successful Madden Football and FIFA Soccer series.
