Atari released the 2600, first as the VCS, in 1977, and swappable cartridges turned the console into a platform rather than a fixed set of games.
Its catalogue included Adventure, Pitfall!, the home Space Invaders and Yars’ Revenge, and the crash of 1983 grew in part from the flood of cartridges it inspired.
Stella and other emulators run the full 2600 library on modern systems.
