Atari released the 400 and 800 in 1979, the first of an 8-bit computer line that ran on into the XL and XE models. Custom chips gave the machines graphics and sound ahead of most rivals early on.
The library included Star Raiders, M.U.L.E., Rescue on Fractalus, Boulder Dash and a steady flow of arcade ports and disk-based adventures.
Altirra and other emulators run Atari 8-bit software on current hardware.
