DOS drove PC gaming from the early 1980s to about 1996, the years of shareware, floppy disks and BBS downloads. It ran Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, which built the first-person shooter, along with Prince of Persia, the Monkey Island adventures and the strategy of X-COM.
These games turned the PC into a real rival to consoles and pushed sound cards, VGA graphics and the mouse into everyday use.
You now play most DOS games through DOSBox, which reproduces the look, sound and feel of the original hardware.
