1869

DOS - 1992
Also available on: Amiga

1869 is a fun 17th century trading game that is similar to its contemporary High Seas Trader but with more emphasis on trading and planning routes than on naval navigation.

The game also (perhaps unwittingly) borrows concepts from Sid Meier's classic Railroad Tycoon to good effect, such as random special shipping assignments that will earn you extra cash if you complete it in time. Plan your trade routes, organize a fleet, and finances carefully-- this game is no cakewalk :) Definitely a great game that finally put underrated developed Max Design on the map.

The game requires to get accustomed with its cumbersome interface but after understanding how it works, the game becomes fully enjoyable for quite a long time.

The Amiga copy here appears to be German, not English. Also it only contains disks 1, 2, and 4.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO PLAY THIS GAME
Step 1: Download DOSBox, it's open source and free: https://www.dosbox.com/
Step 2: Install DOSBox by double clicking on the installer.
Step 3: Create a game folder. Go to the root of your main hard drive (mine is c:\) and create a folder. I called mine "dos".
Step 4: If you haven't yet downloaded the game, do it now. Choose the DOS version. After the download is finished, move the file (in this case, 1869_DOS_EN.zip) to the folder that we created in step 3.
Step 5: Unzip the game in the folder that we created in step 3.
Step 6: Start DOSBox by double clicking on the icon. When DOSBox is started, a window will pop up. Press Alt+Enter at any time to make it fullscreen or exit fullscreen.
Step 7: Mount the c:\dos folder that we created in step 3, by typing this into DOSBox: mount c c:\dos
Step 8: Press Enter or Return. It will display the message "Drive C is mounted as local directory c:\dos\."
Step 9: Access the folder by typing this into DOSBox: c:
Step 10: Press Enter or Return. Now we are inside the folder.
Step 11: Type dir to view the contents of the folder, then press Enter or Return.
Step 12: Type cd foldername to access a folder, then press Enter or Return. In this case, if you haven't renamed any folders, type cd 1869_DOS_EN
Step 13: Some games have two or three folders that you need to navigate in order to access the .exe file. Others do not. In this case, 1869 has another folder that we need to navigate. Type cd 1869
Step 14: We are now in the folder that contains the .exe file. To play the game, type 1869.exe
Step 15: Enjoy the game. You can also use this guide to install and play other DOS games.

Even the "play in browser" option is buggy as hell.

Good game although Max Design always publishes unfinished sims. Search for the German-English translated manual and you will be rewarded with a great essay on colonial history, international commerce, and reverence for the ships that made Europe and America masters of the world.

If you're having trouble saving, as I first was, You must first type a title for your save-game in the middle grey bar of the save section, then when you press save, it will respond, and show your save file in red I believe.

here's a guide for beginners. you have to right-click on the little buildings and pay them to build you a ship at the start, but this article explains it better (not mine) http://1869game.blogspot.de/

I liked this game a lot in the past. Nowadays I am playing an online rpg called Pirates Glory that reminds me of this game. If you liked 1869, you will most probably like Pirates Glory too.

The game can be found at http://www.piratesglory.com/
