Armour-Geddon

DOS - 1992
Also available on: Amiga - Atari ST

Armour-Geddon is a unique 3D combat sim with a nice strategy twist. Your mission: destroy a heavily defended laser weapon by building a fight force and gathering new technologies until strong enough to stop the laser from destroying Earth. There are various different vehicles you can produce and take control of, directly or by using the autopilot. Not too complicated but still complex enough to be worthwile.

Reminiscent of Konami's Killing Cloud and even older Carrier Command in the good blend of action and strategy elements. Recommended for all fans of futuristic sims.

For the MS-DOS version, I've had great success with the special 3-part free version that was released with Personal Computer World in 1994. It's the full game with no copy protection. Running it on my 486 it works fine in VGA 256 mode, with sound effects and intro movie. I can fly around in the fighter, heli and bomber no problem.

The disks are hosted here: http://neil-black.co.uk/retro/coverdisk-archive-personal-computer-world/

Each disk has an extractor. Put all 3 in a dir, rename the first one to something other than armour.exe - then run all 3 in order. Should be good to go.

Have now tried the new pre-installed version; still no joy I'm afraid.

The pre-installed version only works in EGA graphics mode, any other setting causes the game to hang at the Psygnosis splash screen with a "FILE NOT FOUND" message. This can be fixed by copying the file labelled "FILM" into its directory from the version installed with the installation disk images.

I've tried many combinations of the pre-installed and manually-installed .exes with no improvements unfortunately - the copy protection can be bypassed but still neither the jet fighter nor the heli can be used.

Interestingly, the game's copy-protection seems to be tied to the file labelled "ARMOUR" (not the ARMOUR.exe). Substituting the manually-installed ARMOUR file for the pre-installed one gets around the copy-protection code screen for the manually-installed version, but there's still no heli or jet fighter.

Sorry for this large post, I hope this info is of use to somebody. For now though, I'm gonna go with the Amiga version.

Try to use the Pre Installed version, I replaced the old one with this one. You may also get the cracked exe from it, and copy it to the original install you did.

Phew, what a nuisance to get installed (multi-floppy disk installation required an SVN version of DOSBox).

Once its properly working, the game requests a code for copy-protection. After some digging, I found out that the codes required for the DOS version were provided in a seperate codebook supplied with the manual.

Unless some wizard cracks this fresh version's copy-protection or a kind soul uploads scans of the code book, we're out of luck.

Sadly, it appears that the DOS version on here is a corrupted version which has apparently been floating around on the web for a while. As far as I can tell, this version still works and is entirely playable however you cannot pilot either the helicopter or the fighter jet which is a shame.

A handy tip: playing the game in 256-colour VGA mode (the best quality) prevents the miscolouration of the scenery from the cockpit view.

Armor Geddon 2 had MP, was absolutely amazing but unreliable as hell lol. I remember me and my bro linking 2 A500's up to play AG2 MP and having an amazing time but also being frustrated a lot when the connection dropped.
