This long-awaited sequel to Elite casts you as the grandchild of captain Jameson, the protagonist of Elite.
The goal is still to become Elite by killing as many other ships as possible, but you now also have an imperial and a federal military rank, which you can advance by doing missions. Among the best improvements is the immense amount of detail you see when landing on planets or docking. Unfortunately these strong points are marred by the confusing interface, weak computer AI, and repetitive worlds. It's not up to par with Elite, but still fun nonetheless.
Great news for fans! David Braben's website, The Elite Club, has released the game and First Encounters, the sequel, as shareware :) Now is your chance to legitimate experience what is one of the most underrated games ever made! Fully patched, of course :)

i found an openGL port from 2006, possibly abandoned. maybe you guys can add the links to the game page?? https://web.archive.org/web/20171014043201/http://tom.noflag.org.uk/glfrontier.html so far it works well 60 fps, it claims to run at any resolution but i have yet to figure out how.
If you ever have problems with hyperdrive, you need to go in the galaxy map, navigate with arrow keys until the system you want to go in is highlighted in green. Then, go back in the pilot view and press F8. Make sure you are in range of the system by pressing F10 and activating the purple path thing.
@Mr MPTH it is now available
Oh, It's actually called "Stories of Life on the Frontier", not "Tales from the Frontier"?
Could anybody tell me where I can get "Tales From the Frontier"? It's a book that came with this game. I doubt, it was included with this download?
Thank you SO MUCH @HELPFUL ALEX!
Police codes:

Basic Controls:
Z,A = Up, down
= Left, Right
Enter, (R)Shift = Speed Up, Speed Down
Hope this is helpful!
And remember, Fly Dangerously! (Oh, and play Elite Dangerous on Steam)
The combat seems cheaty at first. I suggest watching some tutorial videos by Jim plays on youtube. They help a lot with grasping certain concepts and getting a feel for the UI. As for combat. Turn off your engines when fighting and you can use your thrusters more precisely.
Great great time, bring back good memories :)
I like this game so far, but I can't do combat, and sometimes the autopilot crashes during landing attempts.
In concept I would for sure give this game a 10/10, especially for the year it was made when computer games were still very simple. I am afraid that because of the inexcusably cheaty hardness of this game (like being immediately attacked by 2 ships the very first time I leave the solar system I started in by ships I can't defeat) I have to give it a 0/10 because its so hard its not even playable for me.
OMG! I totally completely and utterly lost a whole summer playing this game :D
Is there any way to save progress? I try the floppy disc icons but doesn't work.
I was playing and I'm playing right now ;)
Amiga version is better in visual quality and music.
But the essence is the same in DosBox ver.
I played EVE for as much as Elite II but it's not the same.
Frontier Elite was the godfather of all space sim's. It's the game that could take you where no other games of the day could ever reach, got me hook line and sinker
Which one of the documents is the manual? The Gazetteer?
Flyin' in space!
What an epic epic game! I see the composer (Dave Lowe of Uncle Art Music for those who don't know) has just released an Orchestral Version played by Chamber Orchestra of London. Check it out here if you love this game!

It's Elite 2 version include all patches that repaired most of these errors?
Frontier Developments released a shareware version of the game to the legions of fans through the Elite Club website (dead site). This version includes all the post-release patches and removes the copy protection schema, although Frontier Developments have neglected to complete the alleged missing code and there remain a number of now well known bugs.
its got a weird copy protection system, include headings etc in the line asked for
If i check the corresponding page, line and word on the documents the manual download sends to me, it still says iv got it wrong.
How do I bypass the space police asking me for letters from a page in a 1980s manual that i don't have?
Manual added
also replacement docs have a manual, its pdf too
heres a sound tip if the game crashes when you warp, change block size to 2048 and pre buffer to 20,in d-fends sound section.also remember to tick the activate sound box, mine was off when first installed
Nomadski - Now it can be made reality: David Braben the creator of Elite and Frontier: Elite2 has made a Kickstarter project for Elite: Dangerous, the long awaited sequel. Contribute and pledge! :-) http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous/
Yep. Copy protection... Good game though.
ah nostalgia...
anyways, installed D-fend, game works, hurrah!
...
copy protection. dammit. does anyone have page 48 of the manual, or know the first letter of word 3 on line 3?
check out open source Vega Strike :)
frontier elite two is the sequel to elite whitch i playd on my c64 the idea was you were a space trader from a long line of traders and you had to trade with other planets but elit was not your ordinery simulation game a lot of the time you were tasked with destroying threats like pirates and thargoids no we get to the graphics this was a wireframe 3d game which blow peoples minds then it is still awsesome in 2011 then we see the sequel which takes place in the same universe with better graphics
If theres ever a game that needs to be remade, its this one.
