The Terminator: Rampage

DOS - 1993

Terminator: Rampage is the third game in Bethesda's "The Terminator" (tm) series, in which you must travel to the past in order to protect the future. The plot is standard post-apocalyptic mumbo-jumbo: it's the year 2029 in Los Angeles. They thought the holocaust had ended when the Orbital Platform was destroyed. They were wrong. SkyNET launched a Doomsday Plan. You must destroy the Machines before they terminate Mankind.

The game is based on the engine used in earlier Terminator 2029, but with obvious graphics enhancements. Despite more impressive graphics, however, the gameplay is somewhat inferior to the first 2 Terminator games from Bethesda due to numerous bugs and boring level design. The game feels rushed and unfinished-- as if Bethesda was scrambling to meet a publishing deadline. This is unfortunate, as the game has a good potential to be a great game once kinks in the engine and all bugs are ironed out.

Overall, a good effort that doesn't live up to other Terminator games. Play its sequel Future Shock instead.

An interesting detour from all Doom-like titles created in the first half of the 90s. Some nice ideas are in this game but also some annoying elements. Higher as usual specs are required.

any way to do a shemale sex mod for this game? I vaguely remember a version like that from usenet back in the mid 90s.

It's a bit "meh". Not as good as Future Shock or Skynet. The Wolfenstein'esque levels leave much to be desired by today's standards. Just run around, shoot stuff, find exit. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Review
-Overview
Terminator Rampage is the sequel to The Terminator 2029. (Prequel, depending on how you view time travel as a plot device.) It's Wolf 3D disguised under living human tissue, grown for the cyborgs. You can't make a bad game when following in those footsteps. Despite the misleading box art, you don't play as a terminator, but you will feel like one, given the amount of abuse that your character can shrug off, and the insane amount of ammo you can carry.

-Weapons (3/5)
There is no backup weapon for when your out of ammo. Every new weapon up to the AK47 makes every preceding weapon obsolete in ammo efficiency and firepower. The shotgun uses it's own ammo, but it's comparable to the Uzi in effectiveness, making it equally obsolete at the time you first locate one. Approximately half way through the game, you will acquire the plasma rifle (assuming that you found all of the parts). This weapon makes every other obsolete, as it provides the ultimate firepower, and recharges it's own ammo quickly. (This includes outmoding the mini-gun and grenade launcher, which aren't even available yet.) The only positive thing I can say, is that since there are a lot of weapons to acquire, it's a consistent pleasure to find a new one.

-Enemies (3/5)
There's a good variety, but they are basically all different sizes of the same shoe. The flying mines are annoying because they can surprise you around corners. I like the armor system, in where you need incrementally stronger weapons to harm incrementally stronger enemy types.

-Level Design (3/5)
The quality of the level design starts at it's best and slowly descends at a 45 degree angle as the game progresses. The office areas in the beginning of the game are designed with purposeful detail, that makes you want to explore. Towards the end, it almost feels like the development team ran out of time, but was still obligated to produce 32 levels. Thus, the game starts to feel like a chore.

-Controls (3/5)
No customization options. Choose Joystick, Keyboard, OR... Mouse. The game is simple enough that you can accept having your foot in a bucket. Controls respond sharply though.

-Music (3/5)
Atmospheric and fitting. The battle music is exciting. Nothing very memorable though

-Graphics (3/5)
Great cut-scenes. Awesomely detailed textures and environments. (For the first half of the game.) The guns look REALLY COOL. The enemies look like blurry action figures. The minigun graphics were created using the same minigun toy that ID used for Doom. One of the later enemies is literally a scaled down Jenner Mech. Arnold Schwarzenegger makes an Easter egg cameo. The game over sequence is a real treat.

-Bugs
The hit detection can be a little screwy.

Total Score (3/5)
Difficulty: Low (Even on Hard)
Frustration: Rare (Searching for missed essential items)
Worth Beating: Yes
Replay Value: No

-Tips
*All of the Plasma Rifle parts that are required to finish the game, will be found within the first 15 levels.
*When entering a new level, text will appear to let you know if Plasma Rifle parts are present. Sometimes two different part types can be present on a level, so be thorough.
*You can farm ammo, health, and armor by traveling back and forth between levels. Floor pickups re-spawn with every visit; Destroyed enemies do not.
*Only when you can see the Target ID will your attacks register.
*Don't try to kill every enemy on the first level with the available ammo of the first level. There is not enough. Go to level 2, and stock up before exploring the first level entirely.

Very hard game but for a raycast shooter is really good. Not on the same level as Doom but you can tell some work went into this despite the limited technology.
