I only got to play twice! my father destroyed the brand new tape because the graphics and the sounds were *so* realistic LOL

One of my fave games back then. I used to think the graphics were so detailed lol, all those tiny but detailed sprites and bitmaps.

"the graphics are used intelligently to convey the gameplay mechanics"
@spectron, this is a great definition for the majority of c64 games era.
none of the more advanced technologies have achieved to beat the playability features of c64 games. they were pieces of art work which were created for a specific, gifted machine by great programmers who knew how to take the best from it.

A real classic! Features 4 tense action sequences that pit you against the CPU (or even a buddy) as either the Allies or Dictator, each having a unique objective that will challenge your ability to both attack and defend as you alternate between mowing down incoming troops, setting routes for strategic invasions, piloting an escape chopper and more! Between the 4 scenarios and 2 factions that adds up to good replay value, although you're gonna want a dry run if you haven't (recently) played Beach Head 2 because your goal isn't always spelled out for you. Once you figure out all the mechanics you'll be rewarded with surprising depth for an action game, making for some tense strategizing as you send your little troopers running off into the fray, or attempt to leap over that incoming knife! Although they appear simple, the graphics are used intelligently to convey the gameplay mechanics--the angle of a turret, the speed of a thrown projectile, the height of a moving anti-vehicle mine--in such a way that you'll quickly be able to rely on them to work out a strategy. The graphics are bright and clear, and effects such as actual bullet holes along with generous animation give them a timeless simplicity that translates well in a now-vintage action/strategy game. The audio is great too, most notably the voice samples which were impressive for the era and lighten the tone a little. Other than that it uses white noise to good effect for the actual combat sounds, but features no in-game music aside from the opening credits...it's forgivable thanks to those cool voice samples and overall SFX quality. A must-play on the C64, especially with a second controller. Don't miss this one!
