Computer Acquire

DOS - 1991

Computer Acquire is a faithful translation of AH's famous boardgame of the same name.

In this game of oligopoly, up to 6 players, any of which can be computer-controlled, compete to build a hotel chain through acquisition. A more detailed description from the great Sid Sackson fansite:

The game is played on a 12 X 9 grid, with squares going from A-1 through I-12. Each player has a hand of six tiles drawn at random, and each turn starts with the placing of a tile into its corresponding square on the board. These tiles represent hotels, though the theme is arbitrary. As soon as two hotels are placed adjacent to one another, they form a chain. The player who initially creates the chain gets one share (out of a total of 25 available) of stock in the new hotel chain. After placing a tile, each player is entitled to purchase up to three shares of stock in any chain currently on the board. As additional tiles are placed adjacent to a chain, increasing it in size, the value of that stock increases.

If you love business sims, you will enjoy this excellent ASCII classic that is very faithful to the board game, with a tremendous replay value and good AI.

There's also a Windows 3.1 game called Oil Baron that followed the principals of Acquire, and added a bit of complexity. Can change the size of the board, and stocks pay dividends. Can find it here:

I played the board game with family in the 1960s, my 8th and 9th grade years. One of the overlooked aspects is that there are several ways to cause the game to end AND to win, you should try to cause it to end when it is in your favor. Since everyone is trying to get to game end, it usually took about an hour to play. And, we learned to hide our cash, you didn't want the other players to know how much money you had left. Unlike Monopoly, which ends in a landslide for the victor, we have had winners by the smallest denomination, I think it was $100. So, the outcome was in doubt and in contention even after the final play until the money was counted. Neat idea.

This version does not display the stock holdings of each player, which AFAIK is a necessity. There's an online version which shows all the stock holdings and is much better to play, although it does not have AI.

This game was not very fun to me. I think its something like monopoly only the layout of the hotels are a square board. I don't really understand the game, and I don't like it.
