Definitely the best gangster game I've ever played and one of the best shareware games ever, Crime Fighter is a game for up to 4 players where the objective is to commit as many crimes as possible to seize control of the underworld.
Depending on the type of building you enter, you can raid the stores, steal cars, kidnap children, raid banks, attack mail trains, etc. As you gain in notoriety you can recruit gangsters and equip them with guns for bigger schemes. Extremely addictive and thoroughly engaging, this game is a must play for all strategy fans. Formerly shareware, the author Peter Steffen has released the game as freeware in 2001, so there is no longer any excuse not to try out this excellent underdog. Two thumbs up, and a venerable entry into our Hall of Belated Fame.

This is an awesome game! I discovered this and Skyroads back in the day on one of the Encyclopedia of Games CD back in the day. It was filled with tons of old games, some shareware some full versions. Crime Fighter was the shareware version. I'd like to find it again because at the beginning there was a picture of a puppy with a gun to it and it said something like "we'll shoot this puppy if you don't buy the full version" I clearly remember it but haven't been able to find any mention of it. Nowadays the shareware version of Crime Fighter is probably pretty uncommon.
Great game! Played it then on the PC.
And years before a similar game named "Mafia" on the C64.
Sounds like an early version of Grand Theft Auto.
one of the most important "hidden gems" of video games history.
