Deadly Rooms of Death

Windows - 1996

A fantastic but unfortunately very rare shareware puzzler, Deadly Rooms of Death consists of hundreds of rooms of insanely difficult puzzles.

The idea is simple: you control a man with a sword that can point in 8 directions. On any turn you can either move the man or rotate the sword. You have as long as you want to plan each action, but it had better be good... your enemies move when you do! This puzzler has many kinds of enemies, and you will need to understand each one's personality intimately to even dream of making it to the final battle with the 'Neather.

Definitely my favourite "pure" puzzle game, DROD features countless brilliantly designed, extremely challenging puzzles. As a bonus, there's the visceral pleasure of slashing through whole armies of evil creatures singlehandedly. If you're a hardcore puzzle fan and you're getting bored of easy stuff like quantum physics, you must try this game!

Note: the download was removed at the request of game author Erik Hermansen. If you want to try it, download the much prettier - and free - remake called DROD: Architects' Edition on this site coded by Mr. Hermansen himself :)

the original version of DROD (ver 1.3), that's the version i remember from my childhood, a great puzzle game, and super hard in later levels. it's playing similar to "checkers", you move, the enemy moves, even the floor tiles are like a checkers board, only with alot of obstacles and mazes in dungeons full of flesh eating cockroaches, big evil "eyes" and goo-like monsters out to kill you. original version of this game will not work on a 64-bit system at all. i had some luck getting it working fine on my older 32-bit system running win 10. but if you really want to play this version on modern systems you have to emulate it. used PCem emulator running on win 95 or 98, and it should work fine.

this game has been remade twice by the same developer Erik Hermansen, they should work fine on modern systems. the 2002's "DROD: Architects' Edition" which is almost identical to the original version except the music has been changed and Beethro's face has been redesign to look more cartoony, in 2005's "DROD: King Dugan's Dungeon" which is similar to Architects' Edition is definitive edition in my opinion, plays the smoothest and has checkpoints which is a god-send consider how brutally hard this game can be. but the only thing i didn't like about the remakes is they changed the music. the OG version has a great soundtrack, the remakes music are okay a bit on the bland side. there's a way to edit the music in the cfg file but i had no luck changing it to the original tracks from 1996, even when i converted them to mp3 files.
