Garfield: Caught in the Act

Windows - 1996
Also available on: Game Gear - Genesis

Garfield: Caught in the Act is a fun platform game starring everyone's favorite hungry cat.

As the game begins, Garfield has somehow been sucked into, and is now trapped inside, a TV. Your task is to help him find missing remote-control pieces to assemble a remote control, and use it get out of that infernal box.

The game plays in a typical avoid-obstacles-and-find-the-exit goal common to most platformers, with colorful background graphics and smooth animation of Garfield and his antics. Levels are a bit repetitive (zany graphics of circuitry inside your TV isn't that interesting, after all), but there are many interactive objects to keep gameplay fresh. Garfield, for example, can grab a hold of overhead wires and swing himself across chasms. Similar to Activision's Pitfall , Caught in The Fact requires more dexterity and timing in getting from point A to B, than on rapid-fire attacks against hordes of monsters. Similar to SEGA's other platformer Comix Zone, there are many well-animated cutscenes shown at the end of each level to advance the plot.

Overall, Caught in The Act is solid fun for all fans of the comics, although it could use more clever level design and gameplay variety. Recommended.

I found way to CD Audio in game working without errors or glitches (I make workable at least). Need make in game directory folder Music and then copy and paste two files: winmm.dll and winmm.ini; next, need copy from Game CD all music in ogg format or download from my archive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TMFmflXWP7ZTuRWMMvHYdlB6VldSuhdm?usp=sharing and paste inside Music folder in game directory, that you maked before. After that, launch game and check CD Music should be playing with check on. That it.

"Garfield: Cought in the Act" or SImply "Garfiled" for WIN 95 is a fun platfomer, and probably the only good Garfield game that's not medicore or complete garbage. the game play and looks identical to the Genesis version which is a shame since with porting to PC i was expecting at least more polish with the frame rate and animation. but the music is in red-book audio which means CD quality soundtrack. the game along with early windows 95 titles like "Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure", "Earthworm JIm Special Edition" and "Toy Story" will not work at all on modern systems like windows 7 or 10. the only way to play the windows version you need a emulator like PCem or 86Box running windows 95/98. the only downside is that setting them up, it can take 1-3 hours (depents how much the installation will take and what else you want to add as well) and you need pretty fast cpu since it's basically running an old windows 95 or 98 operating system on you're modern system. but it's working and running fine the game should run like back in the day. it's a great way to play early windows games.

i got it working fine on my PCem ver. 17 running win 98 second edition.

I think I know what Nothany is hinting about. It is lame of him to have others reinvent the wheel as well though.

Here's what I've figured out so far... I burnt the image to a 700Mb CD. The installed game would only play static like when your radio is tuned between two channels. Tried to play the cd in a cd player, but got same result: no music, just static. In linux I could get the wav files and burnt those to a CD. I copied track 2 to create a track 1 (which is only data on the "real" CD). K3B had an option to hide the thirst track, so I used that to make it look more like the original. The CD thus created was only a music CD. When I put that in a CD player it would play without problems. When I put the CD in the CD drive and start the game, it would play the cd music correctly while playing the game.

Conclusion: something is wrong with the cue sheet, not the bin (data) itself. I am far from a mixed-mode-CD expert, but I'm pretty sure that a different cue sheet can make the difference. I get the feeling that whoever created the image was not concerned about the audio part at all, as a simple test in a normal cd player would have been enough to know the cue sheet was wrong somehow.

Again, I'm not the expert here but on closer inspection of the cue sheet I noticed the pregap was set to the default of 2 seconds. Considering that the pregap is meant to hide the first track containing the data, I believe that number should be higher. How much I cannot tell as the question probably comes down to: How long would the data track play if it was played in a normal cd player?

To whoever uploaded the Windows version of the game. I must congratulate you on making me better at coding ".cue" sheets. Your dump of this game was so atrocious that even when I'm able to run this game it refuses to start immediately, but I must at least give you some credit. It made get off my lazy chair to re-code the entire cue sheet with proper time stamps, spelling , and re-implementing the soundtrack file-by-file. Thanks to you, I finally know how mixed-mode disc games were made back in the 90s.

However please get some better equipment next time, because I don't want to learn another lesson.
