Despite AI quirks, however, the game is undoubtedly Gary Grigsby's masterpiece, and in many ways the culmination of his dedication on perfecting the game engine for this World War 2 theatre that started with War in Russia for the Apple II in 1984 and the subsequent Second Front.

The best Game I have ever played, Love it so much!
Great game. I played it in the 90's. I remember optimizing German production to panzer IIIm's and FkW190's to take best advantage of the production and crew training model used in the game. [Detailed and fascinating but not quite realistic in its constraints.] If you send German strategic bombing missions escorted the AI will rise to defend factories in Russia even if a HUMAN Russia player is trying to conserve his fighters and train up pilots. A Russian has to base fighters out of range of this tactic or get his pilots bled white. I remember my grognard opponent storming out of the game [in his house on his machine] when these tactics produced German capture of Moscow.
This is a great game, but be sure to get the original 1993 version (1.1). The AI in the Matrix remake versions is totally crap, and despite some art upgrades, the original 1993 version is better and it's AI will give you a fair run for your money.

Loved before it was abandoned happy to find it again
This is version 1.1. Matrix Games offers a v3.3 "Matrix edition" for free on their website. That version doesn't come with sound emulation though. Definitely one of SSI's best products.
Incredibly complex game that has a high learning curve, but is well worth it. AI is good making it difficult for Germans to win in later scenarios, which is unlike other games of this era.
