Magicland Dizzy

DOS - 1993
Also available on: Amiga - Amstrad CPC - Atari ST - Commodore 64 - ZX Spectrum

Fans of Spectrum computers would recall that Codemasters' Dizzy series were some of the best games ever made for that computer.

Created by a quirky pair of designers who call themselves The Oliver Twins, the series feature Dizzy, prince of the egg-shaped people (okay, they're actually eggs) who are, quite ingeniously, called yolkfolk. The games are either arcade adventure, or arcade-style puzzlers. The series is memorable for eccentric level design, great music, and wonderful cartoon-style sense of humor.

There were 15 Dizzy games made for the Spectrum, only 7 of which were ported to the PC. Magicland Dizzy is the second Dizzy game for the PC, fourth in the series overall. This time, the evil wizard Zaks is back and has done some strange things to the Yolkfolk - Denzil is trapped in a block of ice, Dylan is in a slumber, Dora has been turned into a frog, Daisy has turned into a giant, and Grand Dizzy is stuck behind a mirror! Dizzy managed to defeat Zaks before, so can he sort him out another time?

Gameplay will be familiar to Dizzy fans: adventure-style puzzle-solving (complete with inventory items) with some frantic action. As well as rescuing the Yolkfolk, you must also collect 30 diamonds (shades of Super Mario here). Unlike the first three adventures, Dizzy now has an energy bar as well as three lives, so the game is much more forgiving than Fantasy World Dizzy. Sound and music this time have also been upgraded to Adlib/Soundblaster, so PC gamers can now hear what Spectrum gamers have enjoyed for years.

Overall, nice graphics, nice tune, nice game - what more can I say? Highly recommended!

Another fine installment of Dizzy. This one is a bit better in terms of graphics and game flow. Good game.

Give it a rest 'The Boz'. The Dizzy series was excellent and you making the same whinging complaint about every game in the Dizzy series won't change that. Stop being a butt-hurting loser.

Hey Crossman, big "man" keyboard warrior" I see. No doubt bullied at school by girls half your size. Bit of a stupid comment from yourself especially as you are claiming others as clueless. The C64 Dizzy games were ports from the Spectrum, but it was no reason that Codemasters were basically lazy. Look at the number of C64 games that were ported over to the Amiga, for example, Myth, with your argument, the Amiga version should have just looked like the C64 version or other games such as Creatures. The same can be said about old Xbox 360 games getting re-released on the Xone or old PS games on the PS 4/5, at least some effort is put into enhancing these games porting onto more powerful machines. So yes, I would have expected Codemasters to have enhanced the port over onto the C64 just because it is a C64 especially with how the Dizzy sales for the 8-bits were. Later Codemasters games looked more the part even Dizzy, but the bigging up of the brand was already done by that stage.

The problem with Dizzy on the C64, at the time they were revered by the computer mags even though the series offered nothing on the format in both game play and especially visuals. Years before the series were getting released, the C64 had many more advanced titles in both gameplay, level design and graphics/sound. So with your own admission, you my friend is clearly the clueless one

Hey Boz
That's because they started out Spectrum, you couldn't very well expect it to change to the C64 layout just because it's C64, right? :-D
Honestly, for someone calling himself the boz, you're sure pretty clueless :-D LMFAO

The Dizzy games were outdated even when they were released. Looked too much like Speccy games. Massively overrated, never liked the go to A then to D, walk past A to go to C then to B and past A again to go to E. Wasn't a fan of the controls either, never liked how Dizzy jumped. I did play a few of the games in the series and never got into them. One of the most overrated titles from the 8 bit era, and a series that made the C64 look like a ZX Spectrum. Creatures was far more superior.
