Project: Space Station

DOS - 1987
Also available on: Apple II - Commodore 64

Before he developed a string of venerable flight sims for LucasArts (Their Finest Hour, X-Wing etc.), Larry Holland designed this exceptional NASA mission simulator that gives you the chance to build a space station. This gargantuan task requires astute planning of shuttle launches over the next 15 years to carry the necessary components for the station.

NASA's help in the game shows in the excellent realistic factors, from budgetary concerns to R&D projects you can take in hopes of making discoveries that will save lives and time. An excellent simulation that dovetails nicely with Virgin's excellent Shuttle space shuttle sim years later.

@zazz I'm at this point too. I think we have to read carefully the project description and also the Crew info. For example H. McNeill, he's a Physicist obcessed with Galaxies. So he must the the best for any project related to galaxies.

@PESCO On my DOSBox emulator the sound is fine.

The game is exactly as I remember it! It's great! Has anyone been able to get the game sound going using DOSBox, though?

I would love to see someone produce a mobile device version

For me personally that would mean for Android

You could easily waste your life playing this game. Quite enthralling and the graphics were rather good for '87. I spent hours on my C-64 building the space station of my dreams back in the mid-late 80s.

the projects get to a point where the allocated scientists arent good anymore. it says to check 'project description' to see which scientists are needed, but that screen only display the starting crew. so im stuck, how do i check which specialists are needed to proceed? it cant be trial and error that would be unsustainable

I liked that you could bring a bunch of satellites up into orbit next to the station, and then just send someone out to launch one when you got a launch mission. You could make a ton of money doing it

This one had an interesting bug/feature: no matter how good or bad your landing was, you couldn't permanently crash a shuttle, and the longest it would be grounded was 28 days. A 7-day turnaround was possible, but very rare as you had to hit the runway at an exact speed and descent angle. The slightest deviation and you lost tiles and got an extra week in the repair depot.

Also, the original release of the game had Columbia and Challenger as the shuttles. The PC release and a small bug patch both changed Challenger to Atlantis. Sadly, we've lost Columbia as well.

There was also a 3rd-party editor for the C64 version that let you edit the crew rosters and stats. Does anyone know if this got ported for the PC version?

...Spent a LOT of hours on this one when it came out. The fun thing to do was to hex edit a saved game, give yourself 255 of several modules, sell them back, and have enough cash to play the game as it should be: Unlimited funding to NASA with no dipshits like Proxmire or Senate page boy rapers like Mondale to screw up the agency's budget. Only sad part about the game/sim is that while you can build a station that loops around the Earth, you can't link the two ends together! Still, a fun waste of time, and I recommend it!

This game is AMAZING if you have a computer slow enough for it to run on. Modern computers won't work, so you'll need the computer to be roughly the speed of an Apple 2e.
