Soldiers of Fortune

DOS - 1994
Also available on: Amiga - Amiga CD32 - Genesis - J2ME

From one of the masters of the action genre comes this excellent top-down action game that is fun in solo mode and exceptional in 2-player. Choose from a handful of mercenaries, each with his/her own weapons, for a blitz through forests, enemy camps, and beyond.

The trigger-happy, kill-everything-in-sight idea is implemented to perfection, with tons of power-ups, secret items, and cool sound effects. In a departure from most action games, Chaos Engine was designed as multiplayer from the ground up - when playing in one player mode, the computer would take control of the other character, forcing a style of gameplay that was both co-operative and competitive, similar in many ways to the arcade classic Gauntlet.

The soundtrack also reacted to how well the players were doing in the game. Thumbs up!

@Carlsgro
Wrong game. This is the 1994 top-down shooter SoldierS of Fortune, also known as The Chaos Engine. The game you're referring to, Soldier of Fortune (singular), is a different and unrelated game from 2000.

Ended up playing the Dos version which is better (faster, better music) than than Amiga version but still let down by the severe design limited 16/32 color amiga constraints.

Uh, this is not a Quake 2 clone in any way.. Especially considering Quake 1 hadn't even come out yet at this point.

Anyway, I remember it being a solid shooter.

Superior game, back in the days. Get a friend over and play it cooperatively with a joystick, because that's how it is meant to be played and if played like this, it's a heckload of fun.

Seriously, I loved this game! Probably my favorite game on the AMIGA500 back then.

@Carlsgro: NOT a Quake II clone, not even remotely.
