Sega released the Game Gear in 1990 as a colour, backlit handheld, using hardware close to the Master System. It offered a brighter screen than the Game Boy at the cost of battery life.
The library shared much with the Master System and included Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi and many Sega arcade ports.
Emulators such as Genesis Plus GX run the Game Gear catalogue on current hardware.
