Games have shipped for Linux since the mid-1990s, starting with id Software’s ports of DOOM and Quake and Loki’s commercial conversions around 2000.
Later, native indie games and broad storefront catalogues widened the library well beyond those early ports.
Because source and binaries often survive, many older Linux games still run on current distributions, sometimes with minor fixes or compatibility layers.
