Sega launched the Master System in 1985, with the Japanese Mark III coming first. It trailed the NES in Japan and North America but sold well in Europe and, for years, in Brazil.
Its games included Alex Kidd in Miracle World, the Wonder Boy series, the 8-bit Phantasy Star and a Master System Sonic the Hedgehog.
Emulators such as Genesis Plus GX run the Master System catalogue on modern hardware.
