So what exactly is this particular edition of Rogue? A bootleg, a hacked version, a variant from source code? Does anyone know? It seems like it might just be a hack/crack with the credits changed.

Been playing this game since it first came out, still have finished all the way thru. One tough game. Simple but fun.

JAWDROPPING: One of the other older versions of rogue had a scroll of genocide: wipe out any monster you want! Well, whenever I got one of those scrolls, my first choice was always (in that case Snakes) Rattlesnakes. I've had more games ruined by hitting minimum strength than I care to remember.

Played this for the first time this year, 2018. My jaw dropped. Try it, you'll understand. After that, you will want to try Angband, which is a more elaborated work on top of the same concept. There's still one thing that bothers me in this game: how to deal with the Rattlesnakes? I mean, I understand there is an enemy that can drain your Strength stat down on touch, but also making this enemy super fast? It's unfair! At least, give the player some means to deal with the enemy, like arrows, or something. And it takes more than one arrow shot to kill the damn thing! I sweat, these rattlesnakes were the reason that caused me to stop playing this. Play it still, you will be impressed, trust me.

I don't get it

I used to play this in the 80's, but it was just called "Rogue" on my PC. There are a few games, particularly one called "Hack" or "PC Hack" that were identical to Rogue, but with many more added features. In fact, "Nethack" is the linear decedent of these games, and is still being supported today (it last updated December 2015), it is considered that NetHack remains one of the oldest games still being developed. The graphics are still ASCII, and still has the general look that Rogue had.

This game was fun. Keep in mind that this was 1984. Yes, there were games with better graphics back then, but a lot of the games in the 80s were about the game play more than graphics. It was fun, challenging, and addictive.

Amazingly deep and challenging if you can understand how to play it, and prefer deep game play over graphics.

I played Rogue as a child on the Atari ST. The version I played had greatly superior graphics than the screenshots seen here. I found the game fun but challenging at the time, but doubt I'd be as entertained now.

I don't want to play this.

@PFIS: You sound like one of those persons who hates games like Fallout 3 & NV just because they are different and much more graphical than the one's that came before. There are loads of new games that are really fun, same goes for old games, there are also a lot of bad games, both old and new.

The big difference is that old text-based games are more like an interactive book that you partly write yourself, while the modern counter-part would be more like an interactive daydream that you partly write yourself.

Some people prefer (and have the right to prefer) one over the other, as for myself, i prefer both. :)

Who cares about the graphics in this game? That is the whole problem with too many reviewers who never played games because they were fun and grew up with Playstation and XBox rather than Atari 2600. Most of today's RPG's cant touch this classic. It has graphics that might remind you of Beast and very similar in play and perhaps the forerunner to the great Nethack. Early games based off of classic D&D tabletop are still some of the most fun RPG's out there. 10 Rogue is no exception. No ti does not have cut-scenes or story-lines. It has absolute FUN! Something way too many games lack in today's generation.
