Avalanche

Windows - 2003

Avalanche is an extremely addictive arcade/puzzle game. As the Avalanche rapidly approaches, you must destroy it as quickly as possible. Use bombs and combine bonuses for increased enjoyment.

Click on three or more matching blocks to destroy portions of the Avalanche. The more blocks destroyed the more points earned. Beware; the Avalanche is quickly gaining speed. Used color bombs to destroy similar colored portions of the Avalanche and black bombs to destroy giant areas. Add point bonuses and the ability to build them up and you have one super addictive game.

Avalanche began as a Macintosh game by Dracosoft in the early 2000s. In November 2003, a small company called Arcade Monkey acquired the rights to Dracosoft’s game catalog with the goal of bringing those titles to Windows. Avalanche was the first game chosen for that transition. For a brief period in 2003 and 2004, the Windows version was released under the Arcade Monkey name, including Avalanche 2.1. This is the version many Windows players remember today.

The partnership did not last long. In July 2004, Dracosoft announced that Arcade Monkey was shutting down after its main developers took jobs elsewhere. The rights returned to Dracosoft, which continued developing and updating Avalanche on Macintosh. So although Avalanche is often remembered as an Arcade Monkey game, it was originally created by Dracosoft. Arcade Monkey was a short but important chapter in the game’s history, responsible for bringing it to Windows and introducing it to a wider audience before the company disappeared less than a year later.
