Captive

DOS - 1992
Also available on: Amiga - Atari ST

A big sci-fi hit on the Amiga and Atari ST that went unnoticed on the PC, Captiveis one of the best sci-fi RPGs ever.. on par with Karl Buiter's Hard Novain epic scope and refined gameplay but with a more cumbersome interface.

As an innocent unfairly sentenced to 250 years in cryosleep, you must escape, recruit crew members, and (naturally) save the world. Lots of novel features, e.g. scientific gadgets that you can equip (similar to chips in Circuit's Edge), and the ability to allocate experience points among attributes make this a great RPG.

The fact that it is designed by Anthony Crowther, designer of many Commodore 64 classics, should also entice traditional RPG lovers to check this out :)

Loved this game back in the day. I used the action replay cartridge to hack in to get past the bug that gave the incorrect code for one of the panels that opened up the rest of the dungeon. So went on to play many replays!

You could actually 'maximise' your weapons by the end of the 2nd set of planets. 8 flamethrowers is the most expensive but is NOT the best, there are better weapons for damaging single monsters. Dualcannons have the most bite, but at 10 shots per clip and the fact if you miss the bullets come back at you like a boomerang, they have limited utility. Ion pulses are simply the best all-round weapon. I always found 4 ionpulses, 2 dualcannons, and 2 flamethrowers to be the best endgame loadout.

Guys, can't get the right mouse button to work so can't kill anything. Any idea what the problem could be?
Cheers

I have huge admiration for Anthony Crowther. He coded this to run on 1/2Mb RAM on the Amiga and on one floppy disk, it randomly generated up to 64,000 worlds (maybe more, I remember it was linked in some way to binary) that took, on my average, 8-10 hours to complete one 10 mission sequence. I should probably add that I only got as far as around 60 full missions! The great bit was that it took probably 15 (guessing, as it's been a few years!) 10-planet sequences before you got even close to maximizing your 4 droids/humans to full armor/weapons. Superb game play throughout , admittedly, repetitive but the game wages higher class enemies against you to complement your own progression and prevent further missions becoming easy. This has to be a game I would add to my Desert Island classic selection (along with Dungeon Master and Monkey Island ;)
