Abandoned Places: A Time for Heroes

DOS - 1992
Also available on: Amiga

Abandoned Places is a subpar PC conversion of a well-respected Amiga RPG. In this dungeon crawl, you must select four heroes to fight the evil that threatens the land of Kalynthia as they emerge from their prison.

The game is noted for the variety of graphics, e.g. 3D for dungeon exploration and combats and a bird's eye view for travel, depicted with excellent animations. The game is also very open-ended in that you can ignore the main plot for a long time, and there are very few tasks to do besides monster bashing. Too bad the PC conversion turns the game's strengths into horrendous graphics and sluggish pace. Caveat emptor.

Sadly, the DOS version on here locks up after finishing the first dungeon. The only one that worked for me was off www.oldgames.sk, so I guess there's some copy-protection that's being triggered here.

If you're stuck a black screen: create a directory called SAVE, and start the game...
example: C:\APLACES\SAVE

I run Abandoned Places with DosBox 0.74. But there's a problem: After I have selected my four characters, the game stops. I see a black screen and nothing happens.

Who knows what to do?

After I select the characters, the game just stops... It goes to a black screen in DOSbox and then nothing.

The Amiga version is MUCH better to play even with an emulator.
