Legacy of The Ancients

DOS - 1989
Also available on: Apple II - Commodore 64

A classic RPG from Electronic Arts, this game became an instant classic once it was released on the Commodore 64. One of the best "solo" RPG ever, everything in this game is flawlessly implemented, from the combat module down to the entertaining casino in towns. I daresay this is the best CGA RPG ever made :)

Too bad its sequel Legacy of Blacksilver was never converted to the PC, although its cousin Questron 2 was.

Hello classic gamers. A quick note from the guy who actually designed all of these graphics way back then. I was, at the time, a young college student at Michigan State University with big dreams about the future of digital design - and am still enjoying that ongoing adventure. The twin brothers who coded the game built for me a rudimentary design interface that would make us all laugh now - but at the time it was cutting edge. The entire screen was built from 8 x 8 pixel "bricks" that I created. Each brick could contain any 3 colors from an 8 color palette. Those bricks could be duplicated or re-used in any fashion. For example, the water, cave walls, etc were all patterns; the monsters eyes were single use. While I did not go on to a career in game design, it was a big thrill to have my work commercially released. My stepson is an avid gamer (competition winner, etc) and pointed me to this page. Since my Commodore 64 is no longer in tip-top condition, I guess I'll give the old game another go here. Thanks all for the compliments - put a smile on my face.

One of the few I’ve managed to complete, on the C64. A trick I learned was to map the dungeons with a scrabble board, coins to represent doors and etc. More flexible than graph paper. When I cleared the level, I’d transfer it to graph paper then. Also, cheated, saved before entering casino, bet ‘bigly’ and saved or reset depending on outcome.

My first CRPG. I never progressed past character level one back in the day even though I was able to complete The Test. I give it 4 stars - but that is generous. The graphics were awesome for their time and actually hold up alright. A few very questionable design decisions though. Combat is frequent and repetitive, without the reward of advancement a XP based system would have. That would be more ok, but for the arbitrary leveling which is required to advance in the game and fails to recognize advancement...big flaw there.

My Favourite RPG. I played and finished it several times on the C64. It was the first game I finished on my own without hints from my friends and it was also the first one I finished before my friends.

Hey guys... this is incredible... huge fan of the C64 version of the game and played it back 30 years ago when it came out.

In any case, how do you play the C64 download? Do you need a special emulator? I saw one mentioned in the comments above, but not sure how to proceed. Thanks!

This was truly a great game, but sadly underrated even back in the day. I still find the entire "museum exhibit" concept and the way the game centered around finding gemstone coins to access more of the museum an amazing concept and would love to see something similar someday. And who knows? With the indie scene and crowdsourcing maybe we'll finally see a Legacy of the Ancients II someday....

Didn't the C64 version also run on the VIC-20 if you managed to get the eternal RAM carts up to 32MB, and that includes the vector graphics cart?
