J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Vol. I

DOS - 1990
Also available on: Amiga

Commonly regarded as one of the best Tolkien games ever made, Interplay's adaptation is an excellent blend of RPG and adventure that vividly captures the spirit of Tolkien's worlds through cutscenes and vibrant in-game graphics.

The only downsides I can think of for this cult classic are: no automap feature (added in the CD-ROM version) and numerous combats (althought most are avoidable). The game is truly epic in scope and design, and the fact that it does not follow the book too closely leads to numerous side-quests and different paths to the end.

Highly recommended.

I have tried both DOSbox and DOSBOX-X. No matter what I do I cannot get it to load. "rmdev.sys not installed. Please check your config.sys file." I can install the game from the mounted CUE file just fine.

had problems trying to install the game using the files available here. Maybe I’m too inexperienced with MS-DOS and DOSBox installation commands, but I was finally able to play after downloading the game from the Internet Archive. It’s my first time playing something this old, and it’s a great game to experience—the intro movie is pure cinema!

To archcorenth's point below, you actually do not need the acorn nor a beefed up party to get the Springstone in the Enchanced CD-ROM version. It is entirely possible to not trigger the Black Alder fight by simply passing the tree he hangs around on the eastern side instead of the western side.

You can also get to the hill by going directly south from Tom Bombadil's house until to hit water then going straight west to the top of the hill. Use a shovel at the top of the hill, and get the stone.

Despite having some improvements like an automap and better music, I do not recommend playing the CD Rom Enhanced version of this game, because it has a bug which makes it impossible for you to pick up an acorn in the Tom Bombadil section that you need to complete the game. The only way to complete the version without the acorn is to return to the area later in the game with a beefed up party and defeat Black Adler to receive the springstone.

Anyone know why I am having trouble saving? I love this game--played it when it came out!--and I'm super excited to have another go.

But when I save, and try to come back in, it acts like it can't find my save file. I'm not very familiar with DOSBox or how it configures things like save files (though I can see it in the GAMES drive on my computer) so what am I missing to get back to my save?

The comment under me is all you need.
for example when you put the files in c:\Lotr\

then this line:
Z:imgmount d "C:\cdimg.cue" -t iso -fs iso
becomes
Z:imgmount d "C:\Lotr\LORDCD.cue" -t iso -fs iso

took me 5min to figure out so I thought this might help. xD

Got the enhanced version to work.
1. Change the contents of the cue file to:
FILE "LORDCD.bin" BINARY in notepad or whatever you use to edit cue files (as suggested earlier)
2. Follow these instructions:
Z:mount c "c:\images"
Z:imgmount d "C:\cdimg.cue" -t iso -fs iso
Z:d:
D:
3.Full install (movies and all) takes about 30 minutes to an hour, once its done go to the directory you installed it and play. Works like champ. Be sure to make sure the cdrom is still mounted after the install so you can get the cd music.

It would be nice to have an easier way to play the enhanced version instead of waiting almost 30 minutes to install it via the corrected cue.

I I would like to know if there is maybe a tutorial I can follow to get this game to run, every time I try to play it, it says I have to enter the cd for the movies to work, how do I run this through DOSBox? I have tried to do what in the wiki says but it's confusing for me

Sorry if I'm being DOS illiterate, but buggered if I can get this thing to run. I've put the .bin and .cue in my D drive as follows:

D:\LOTR\LORDCD.bin
D:\LOTR\LORDCD.cue

Then I open DOSBox and type the following:

Z:mount e "d:\LOTR"
Z:imgmount f "e:\LORDCD.cue" -t iso -fs iso

I get an error message about not knowing the size, so I tried the -size 512,53,16,142 parameter but no luck. Also leaving -fs as none didn't work... maybe I should try fat?

Anyway, sorry if I'm being a pain, but some hand-holding here would be great, I'd love to play this game again!

I remember when my parents got our first CPU with a CD-ROM drive. We got an Encyclopedia, music videos, and a CD of a million apps and game demos including this one. Good times.

Regarding the CD issues. LORDCD.cue has a bug in it. Open the file in a txt editor and change `FILE "LORD_CD.bin" BINARY` to `FILE "LORDCD.bin" BINARY`. This way, it has the accurate filename for the .bin. Then you will be able to imgmount the cue instead of mounting the bin. Mounting the .cue is necessary to get the music playing. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, see the DOSbox Wiki link above.

If anybody has an answer about the question that Mark asked CD-ROM must be active in order to play music can you post the answers or instructions and please make it sound as simple as possible maybe write a demonstration.

Anyone else getting a message saying that the CD-ROM must be active in order to play music? It would seem the game plays well if I just go through the full install using the image-mount walkthrough. Am I missing a step in DOSbox that will activate my "CD-ROM"? I know this is a shot in the dark, but figured I would try.
