Death Gate is a great fantasy adventure based on best-selling novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
As young Haplo, member of the despised Patryn race, you are tasked with finding all pieces of the World Seal to avenge your people and free them. While similar to other Legend's graphical adventures, Death Gate broke new grounds with an ingenious spellcasting interface that is superbly integrated into the game engine, and required to solve many puzzles.
The storyline is strong, although a little too simplistic given the rich fantasy world of the books. Death Gate is also notable for being the first Legend game to feature truly exceptional voice acting-- among the best of its kind.
With excellent writing, challenging but not-too-difficult puzzles, and a very high production value with respect to SVGA graphics and voice acting, Death Gate is one of Legend's finest and most underrated games. A must-have.

Death Gate is no longer available for purchase on Ziggurat Games
This game is abandonware. Please post it back up. Would be helpful. Although I'm currently, and quickly, downloading a torrent of it, so maybe it doesn't matter.
This game is unavailable on Ziggurat and any other online retailer. The available link to buy is dead. The game is completely abandoned
this game should be put back on myabandonware considering i cant buy it on the site it links to buy. sooooo... ABANDONED!
Runs like ass but is a diamond in the rough. It has fully voiced dialogue which is a rare oddity for dos games, if you can get your hands on the gog version get that. That's about it there are no mods, hacks or anything to fix the horrible lag.
I agree, this is again abandonware. Would love to see it available here again or made available on an online store.

Yes please if this game is not longer on any platform please add it again, I cant find it anywhere
Please, add back the game again. There is no way to buy it anymore again.
The game is not on GOG nor Ziggurat anymore
You can install the game by mounting the CD ROM in Windows and go to DOSBox, mounting it there then also. Then proceed to install with install command, choose your setting and a minimum install. After it is installed and working, you can edit the legend.ini file to point to a location on your hard disk and copy the needed files (everything that the path setting refer to) from the virtual CD onto your hard disk, so that it matches. You can then play the whole game from your hard disk.
Yeah I’ll probs next year. I don’t know if ya can handle it or not but I’m gonna now. Great way too much money for the kids to get them back
I believe that I bought this on GOG a while ago? Don't know if the copyright owner will actually bother to claim it, if they still exist, but the GOG version may be easier to get working.
Thank you so much! I got this working, with sound and all, January 2020 on a Windows 10 machine. Here is what I did, for anyone in the future that needs:
- Download the full CD Image ISO
- Install DosBox and Daemon Tools Lite
- Extract the Death Gate ISO CD image (.bin and .cue) into a folder
- Go into that folder and mount the DEATH_GATE.cue file using Daemon Tools Lite.
- Remember the drive letter it mounted to, you will need it below.
- Then open DosBox and type:
-- `mount d i:\` (replace 'i:\` with whatever drive letter the ISO DEATH_GATE.cue is mounted on for you)
-- `i:` (switch to the virtual I drive
-- `install`
- After installing the game type:
-- `mount c e:\` (or wherever the installed files are in \DGATE\)
-- `c:`
-- `cd \DGATE`
-- `DGATE`
should work..
I tried the DOS ISO version using Boxer. Boxer gives me a “Death Gate ISO does not contain any MS-DOS programs." error. I have not tried the other download, I figured the ISO version would be more complete being it is 433 MB and the other download is only 35 MB.
Just finished this game now, though managed to get my hands on a CD ISO containing all the spoken words.
The voice acting was occasionally fun, but I don't think this text-only version would ruin it by any means.
Definitely worth playing this if you like point-and-click adventures and like 'nostalgia graphics':)
played this back in 2007 on dosbox, with sound and everything. there should be working versions out there, its a wonderfull game, great Music and a nice magic system.
@Dave you have to contact us
I have the CD version with sound files and everything - completed it again about 2 weeks ago, and all works perfectly!
Is there a way i can contribute my sound-including version to the site (600-ish mb in size)? Its heart-breaking people are playing this game without the audio!!
it freezes the mouse every time I leave the magic screen..so...5 mins into the game...
@Lost Cause: you wanted it, now you got it
Ultimately, nothing you do will work because most of the archives out there (either the 9.x MB or the 3x.x MB) Do Not Include The Voice Files!!!
The game _can_ be successfully installed even if you don't have the CD_ROM - it just won't work without the voice files. SO if our host gets the FULL version and uploads it, you can see for yourself this trick works. I discovered it for The Scottish Open.
First set up a virtual CD-ROM drive.
mount d: -t cdrom C:\Path-To-Install
d:
INSTALL.EXE
mount c C:\Users (Home\game folder, etc.)
c:
Now when you get into the install options, you should see options which won't work (like D and Z). Exit to the prompt, which should be C. Then d: and type install. Back at the drive screen, you should see the C: option. It should work fine after that - other than setting up music and sound. So there you are - even with a successful install, it won't run. And don't think editing the *.ini file will work either.
How do you install this game? It says you can't install to the CD ROM and then quits. I'll keep trying.
That damned puzzle with the gemstone hands... I was stuck there for a week!
shame i have fond memories of this game it was funny at times as well good point and click game
