I wasn't familiar with this game, until now, but what an unusual name for a Golf game - or any game for that matter! The word 'Gardyloo' was well known from the 18th to the early 20th centuries in the UK- particularly in Scotland and Northern England - and is an anglicised version of the French 'gardez l'eau', meaning 'dirty water'. It was a warning shouted from the upper windows of residences when chamber pots full of urine and excrement were poured out, to warn those below that such effluent was on its way and to avoid it if possible! There's no other references to any alternative meanings for this word, so what the connection to this game is, I can't imagine!
