Iron Blood

DOS - 1996

One of the most underrated and obscure 2D platform games ever made, Iron Blood (released as Interrupt in Korea) offers fast and furious arcade-style fighting in well-animated backdrops, against a surprising variety of "bosses." Gameplay essentially is identical to a typical side-scrolling platform game, except that the robots and enemies in the game are very well drawn in Japanese anime style.

You have 2 players (Roy Fregun piloting the RG-104 Cyber-Troll and Sedrin Cleis piloting the SG-43 Ripple) to choose from in Iron Blood, each with his/her own special abilities and weapons. The game is equally fun with both, although the RG-104 Cyber-Troll's jet booster was very helpful in making those impossible high jumps you will need to make. Aside from the advantage the jet booster lends to the RG-104 Cyber-Troll, the game is equally challenging with both characters. The game's highlights, aside from great anime graphics, are definitely the end-level bosses, each of whom has unique weapons, attack modes, and weaknesses that are fun to discover.

With plenty of enemy robots to blast, lots of cool power-ups, and imaginative bosses that are no cakewalk, Iron Blood is definitely worth a look to all fans of the genre. If you have even a passing interest in platform games, you will probably like Iron Blood. Fans of Mega Man (i.e. Rockman in Asia) in particular will find the game addictive. Thumbs up!

A very enjoyable game with two different play styles. Strongly recommended.
Original Korean version even has anime style cutscenes which Western port lacks unfortunately.

I happen to own the manual which gives a decent backstory to the events happening in the game.

Very difficult game. Roy Fregun's playstyle is reminiscent of Assault Suits Valken/Cybernator (though lacking a 'hold aim' button or a shield,) while Sedrin Cleis feels more like Zero from Mega Man X (and has a health draining special attack activated by a Street Fighter style motion in lieu of having selectable weapons.) The shmup segments would be more fun if you weren't such a huge target, plus they drag a bit (and also powerups dropped during these segments are damn near impossible to grab unless you were at point blank range.) Looks and sounds great (except for the laughable voice clips,) but I really only had fun for the first stage. Also you can get infinite points with SC in stage 1 with her Option, as it will attack something that isn't really there in one area, which gives you points for as long as you stand there.

For keys, they're really easy to figure out but here you are anyway:
Arrows - Move/Aim (RF can dash by double tapping a direction, which also opens up a powerful dash attack that requires specific spacing)
Ctrl - Jump (RF can hold for a temporary jet boost, SC can double jump)
Space - Swap weapons (RF only, get more weapons at higher powerup levels)
Enter - Check powerup level
F1 - Pause
F2 - Toggle music (it still plays, but very low)
F3 - Toggle SFX
F10 - Return to title
During shmup sections the jump button shoots backwards.
