Moonmist

DOS - 1986
Also available on: Amiga - Amstrad CPC - Apple II - Atari 8-bit - Commodore 64 - Mac

You are a famous young American detective who has been invited to Tresyllian Castle by your old friend Tamara Lynd. She is being haunted by the Tresyllian ghost, who seems intent on scaring her off. Can you solve the mystery of the castle?

One of Infocom's weakest titles, Moonmist is quite average compared to the company's other games: room descriptions are sparse, and most puzzles are uninspired. Even though puzzles are easy, they do not have the charm of puzzles in Wishbringer to keep you hooked. Perhaps one reason room descriptions lack detail is that the game box includes a neat tour booklet that already describes the castle in detail. Still, that is not a good excuse for a company who is famous for strong attention to detail in their games.

On the upside, the game offers four variations in the plot (more or less random as you play), which gives the game some replayability. Each plot variation is only slightly different from the other three, however. Another positive aspect is the NPCs, who are quite well written and on par with characters in Infocom's other games.

With easy puzzles and considerable replayability, Moonmist is perhaps best considered as a game to introduce people to murder mystery text adventures. If you are new to this genre, Moonmist is a good starting point before you play the likes of Suspect, The Witness, and finally Deadline.

Why complain that it is too easy when the intro above states that it is an easy intro level text adventure?

I thought it was rather enjoyable and replayable with different endings.

I played this as a kid on an 8088 IBM-Compatible. For it's day, it was a was a good game aimed at the 8 to 13 year old range. The game is pretty straight forward: pick a color (there are five) and get a different treasure/murder/ghost for each one.

Absolutely go to the kitchen as soon as possible to get the lantern.

What a disappointment!

That game is much too easy, you can finish it in less than an hour if you manage to find where the Moonmist is hidden. You don't even need to solve the murder or question the NPCs...

What was really a let-down is that the beginning is really good and promising. The introduction is well done and introduces the plot nicely. But after it fails hard. Real hard. You should be able to question the NPC to get clues and find the murderer. But the parser and NPC go in your way. Plus you don't get much time to act. Overall, a serious disappointment.
