Moraff's World

DOS - 1991

Second and best in Steve Moraff's quirky RPG series, Moraff's World expands the kill-monsters-get-treasure premise of Moraff's Revenge by adding more sophisticated gameplay features, and many times larger gameworld. Description as MobyGames says it all:

There are many dungeons and continents to explore in this classic. All the dungeons are randomly generated, though once the game is played for the first time the dungeons stay the same afterwords. There are over 40 different monsters with different attributes and weak points and 200 levels of each dungeon to play.

The dungeons are explored in first person view, and you can travel over the surface of the earth in top down view as an X (the effect used to display varying heights of terrain is interesting). There are also many items to collect, from holy hand grenades to your standard set of plate mail armor.

With a larger scope than Moraff's Revenge and better user interface than Dungeons of The Unforgiven, Moraff's World is the best RPG in this cult classic series. Recommended for any fan of Roguelike games who is looking for a "light" dungeon crawl with a cool sense of humor.

Oh, and if you never find the holy hand grenade in the game, you ain't seen nothing yet [EG]. Thumbs up!

So if people are still having trouble to run the game, this is how I did it. First install DosBox. Second install Moraff World. I actually downloaded Moraff World from Dosgames.com so it may be different. Now this is where my memory is fuzzy. You make a folder in C: and name it dos games or something. When you download dos games extract them in the C: folder named dos games. Run the Moraff world by typing in MW.EXE, or dragging the launcher to the dosbox desktop icon. If you dont know how to mount read the basic installation and setup guide of dosbox. Now enjoy Moraff World (this goes for other games too i think)

Wow, I spent SO much time playing this game in the 90's when I was working on enlisting in the Air Force. I got hooked on it. Such a great game.

This game is the best of the 3 in it's series, Here's a couple tips for your enjoyment:

1) if you want a new dungeon, head out onto the overworld map and try entering a different area. Remember to get a raise dead contract in that new dungeon, otherwise things may get a bit spicy.

2) max out your luck stat. it directly effects how often loot and spells are dropped, including the super amazing rings of regeneration and much needed potions of healing.

3) invest time in finding shortcuts. after floor 150, you can't cheapskate the game with floor sloshers or spells anymore. The spell Relocate becomes incredibly handy, as do stones of teleportation

4) Sage has the easiest time beating the game, due to his immense health pool, but the final boss still requires potions of healing, and management of buffs.

Has anyone ever found a full version of this game?
Anjorni, Any chance I can buy those disks of yours?? lol. I can't find the full version anywhere on earth. Although, I have a box of 800 floppies I bought a long time ago. i haven't opened them because I don't have any way to properly store them yet. They are all sealed in nitrogen bags so I have no way of knowing what is on them yet... Anyway, I have searched the internet dry looking for the whole game and I can't find it! Maybe gog has it...I didn't even think to look there.

played this game a lot when I was in high school. Got a lot of powerful items. But died after being cornered by the rainbow monster... cannot walk, so no regenerate. This is a highly addictive game. :)

I played this game unendingly every weekend for over a year in the early 90s when I stayed at my grandparents. Stuff happened and I stopped seeing them but the memory of this game stuck with me.
I cannot believe that after over 20 years of looking for it I've finally found it!

Thank you.

I can pretty much guarantee I've played this game more than anyone in the world. :) I accumulated around 10 rings of regeneration and it was always a struggle to keep from going too low and completing the game. I was basically immortal. I'm a programmer now and would like to design something like this. With permission, I'd call Moraff's Quest or something, where you not only find standard creatures, but can also find online players to kill and take half their stuff.

A common fallacy I find in reviews of this game is that the Monk, Sage and Fighter are not viable characters. False. The Monk in particular is the easiest character in the game to play, as long as he starts with high wisdom and intelligence for max spell points, and I challenge anyone who has no other particular life to beat the Red Dragon King with a Fighter. It's doable, although it will take you a long time to do it. Find those Resist Level Drain papers...they're around!

I've known Steve since the mid 1980s while I was DJ'ing at KZEW in Dallas. He's the guy that would have been Bill Gates if Bill Gates wouldn't have been Bill Gates. LOL. I was amazed by his games them and am still now as they are some of the best I've ever seen anywhere and were hard in many cases making me want to try harder. Thanks for the memories Steve. Sincerely, Dr. Rhiannon A. La Passioneria CDR USN Ret.
