Probe, if you don't know how to use the files, how are you going to compile a game yourself anyway?
You CAN use this game on mac, you need to mount/or burn it first to install it. Download this: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/products/dtMacLite Just read instructions on here: http://www.myabandonware.com/howto/

Windows version isn't abandonware, but the quake 3 engine is completely free and there are dozens of free open source games that use it and are free and is in beer. Search for Quake Live, or Open Arena, or Alien Arena, or Urban Terror or just download the engine and use the files from the old game to compile it yourself.

Buy on Digital Stores
Quake III: Arena is available for a small price on the following websites, and is no longer abandonware.
