In 1988 my high school had this game and because I was a metalhead visiting my brother in Montana for a year, they did not take so well to people that did not look like "cowboys" So my 2nd period teacher gave me access to play this at lunch so I would not be bullied by some mean kids. I really enjoyed this game, it was educational as well. It was like an early form of Pirates Gold to in some ways. I loved the ship battles. Lots of memories.

I found several cheats and usually end up with over $200 billion and around 3.5 million points.

I still love this game! I run it on apple emulator at the fastest speed. I found Taipan in BASIC from archive.org and it's easy to change it. For example, I only had to change one line and I never get attacked by Li Yuen pirates

I played the heck out of this game, and discovered the cheat too. You could pay back Elder Brother Wen more than you owed him, and if you did you would gain equal interest on your overpayments. Since his rates were so high, I could end the game with billions in the Wen bank.
