To get this to work on a modern machine:
1. Download the game files from here. 2. Download DOSBox (free, google it.) and install it. 3. Extract the game folder (cmworldd) from the .zip file into your C:\ drive 4. Run DOSBox.exe 5. In the DOSBox command prompt window, Type: mount c C:\cmworldd (press enter) 6. Type: c: (press enter) 7. Type: CARMEN (press enter)
Enjoy the game. If you want to configure the resolution, fullscreen, and other options, you'll need to edit the config file in the DOSBox folder (DOSBox 0.74-3 Options.bat)

How do I run the setup in Boxer? It asks me for floppy disks. I know I can run it as-as, but I want to get Roland MT-32 for my music to work, and not the awful PC speaker music.

Any games made before 1994 MUST be run through a dos emulator, such as DosBox. If you run manually through Dosbox, in order to save yourself from having to mount the drive every time, just click and drag your game FOLDER over the top of the DosBox icon and release. DosBox will open up to THAT game folder, already mounted and ready to go. At the command prompt, type in the name of the .exe file to start the game. If you do not know what the name of the .exe file is, type "dir/p" at the prompt to pull up a directory list, showing all the files in the game folder, and look for files ending with ".exe". Or, if you don't want to go through all of those steps, look for a program that works with DosBox, such as Defend Reloaded, which you can add games to in order to organize them in a list, in the form of clickable icons.

We have it on a real Win 98 and can play it but no sound.
Dad and I think it is looking for a non existent SB16 card because if you click on *Mute* the computer crashes to where you have to do a soft reset.

Note to all people with any version of Windows 98 and above. This must be played on a Dos Emulator if you have 32 or 64 bit Windows. In fact, this is true of ALL games made before 1994. DosBox is the best Dos Emulator for Windows IMHO, and it now has Vista and Windows 7 support in the newest version.

Just to correct myself yet again. There were two previous versions of this game. The first one was CGA,not EGA, and the Enhanced Version was VGA. this version is SVGA like I said before. I have owned all three versions (not to mention the NES version) at one time or another, and I couldn't keep them apart in my head.

I just downloaded this onto a laptop running Windows 7 and it can't open any of the .exe files because it says "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, then contact your software publisher." Anything I can do to help this? Or am i not able to find Carmen on this computer?

@affinity, you can run the setup first if your sound doesn't work. I tested it on Boxer and it works perfectly.

I just downloaded this file, because I loved this game way back when, but the music and voice isn't working (only the sounds that used to be handled by the internal speaker work). Is there something special I need to do to get it working?

I forgot to mention that there is an NES port of this game floating around somewhere. I used to own it 20 years ago. At the time, my computer was an old monochrome 8088 which I used primarily for school, so I played all my games on my NES.

Arguably the best non-puzzle educational game out there, it is both informative and fun to play. Part of what makes it so fun is the humor involved, because it is styled as a parody of the cheesy detective movies of the 1930's. Any parent playing this with their child will have as much fun as the child does. There was an educational television show based on it as well. The Deluxe Edition was just the original with slightly better(SVGA instead of VGA)graphics, with an atlas and world almanack included in the box. In my opinion, it was more fun than the enhanced version.
