Commodore released the 64 in 1982, and low prices soon made it the most popular home computer of the decade. Its SID sound chip and hardware sprites gave games a look and sound that fans still prize.
The machine held thousands of titles across every genre, among them The Last Ninja, Turrican, Maniac Mansion, Impossible Mission and Boulder Dash, sold on cassette and disk and swapped through a busy cracking scene.
VICE and other emulators now run C64 software on modern hardware, with disk and tape images loading in seconds.
