I was able to get this to work with DOS Box (and chatgpt). The download zip can be extracted then mounted as a CD-Rom via DOS BOX. While mounted do the install.bat (the chess war install.bat from extracted folder) and walk through setup. You will now have the extracted folder and a CHESSWAR folder. Then you exit and run DOS Box again and mount the same extracted folder like before and then cd to CHESSWAR and run CHESSWAR.EXE and the game should work. Better to use a .bat file for quick playing. See below:
Yes this is very good, we can absorb every step like a bed of roses and of course we hope that the forest will be fertile again. So there is no golf course in the head, yes of course. Thank you

This is an exciting game, I have been talking to the chess board for a long time but until now there has been no answer, even though it was a hint from my chess teacher. This made me even more confused, because the chess board never answered anything? Then I asked my friend, and my friend suggested that I talk to the surfboard and now frankly from the bottom of my heart I am getting more and more confused.

Looks like a nice game but after installing it under DosBox, it apparently requires the CD to run. I suppose I could copy an image to a flash drive and mount that as the CD drive, but that's too much trouble for my interest.

Just found a site with free download. Very well done. Uses dosbox correctly. Game plays like in good old command line dos. https://www.old-games.com/getfree/11913 Free takes about 4 days to download, but very worth it. Have fun!

01/27/24 I have been tinkering with this game in Dosbox (Windows 10). Opening credits and video run but are a bit pixelated. Best viewed in window mode. The game itself run very well and clean. Sterio sounds are clean. Only issue is audio crackling some. No codecs per VLC. Videos are really cool. Best chess game I've ever seen. Best method is copying both disks to HD, create batch file to mount each as separate cd drive, then cd to directory and run. I could help better, but need contact info to send screenshots and method.

I bought this game in the 90's and it won't run on anything other than the dos that comes with windows 3.1. Then..... if you try to run it on a different version like dosbox or freedos... it recognizes that and refuses to run on purpose. It was a really cool game though like battle chess except that instead of an animation, there was a little movie showing the battle and there were more than one shot for each capture. There were also different opening books including a huge one that says you may never win another game again.

INSTALL BAT:
@echo off
"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74-3\DOSBox.exe" -fullscreen ^
-c "mount c C:\DOSGames" ^
-c "mount d \"C:\DOSGames\Chess-Wars-A-Medieval-Fantasy_DOS_EN_v14b-Installer\" -t cdrom" ^
-c "d:" ^
-c "INSTALL.BAT"
STEP 2:
After Installing use this BAT to launch game:
@echo off
"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74-3\DOSBox.exe" -fullscreen ^
-c "mount c C:\DOSGames" ^
-c "mount d \"C:\DOSGames\Chess-Wars-A-Medieval-Fantasy_DOS_EN_v14b-Installer\" -t cdrom" ^
-c "c:" ^
-c "cd CHESSWAR" ^
-c "CHESSWAR.EXE"
