Leather Goddesses of Phobos! 2: Gas Pump Girls Meet the Pulsating Inconvenience from Planet X

DOS - 1992

Leather Goddesses of Phobos 2 is one of the most sought-after oldies in existence. It is ironic, then, that it happens to be one of the worst computer games ever made in any genre. Even more ironic (and incredulous) is the fact that it was designed by Steve Meretzsky, the creative meistro behind such classics as Infocom's A Mind Forever Voyaging and the original Leather Goddesses of Phobos.

So what makes this game so awful it should be forgotten? The more you play, the more you can't shake the sinking feeling that Meretzsky is perhaps trying to appeal only to the testosterone-high, pea-brained section of the gaming market. Just about everything else in the game (except the good graphics-- but then, it takes up 14MB of disk space) is either badly designed, or badly executed. In the beginning, you can choose to play as either Zeke, Lydia, or Barth the alien who crash-landed on earth.

Despite this illusion of longevity, each path you take can be finished in a few hours-- there are few items to use, and you don't even need to use everything you can take. Playing Lydia is exactly the same as playing Zeke's game, except that you screw males instead of females (yup, you heard that right-- ergo, that testosterone appeal), and Barth's path is even shorter. Because the game uses a one-click-does-all scheme, you can finish the game merely by clicking madly everywhere on the screen (it's not easy separating items that can be picked up from the rest).

Overall, the game is a big disappointment and a disgrace to the Infocom name. Juvenile dialogues, insipid puzzles, and out-of-place "mature" content seem like Meretzsky might be targeting this game a tad too narrowly. Still, that's no excuse-- Meretzky's own Spellcasting games were also intentionally sophomoric, but they were much, much more enjoyable to play and do require intelligence to solve. LGOP2 might be considered an underdog for some, but not unless you lower the standards to ground-level. Those who've been looking for this game-- proceed at your own risk.

The 11MB one is from an install from original disks - put the folder where you want, make sure you have DosBox then just run the install and select configure to setup the sound. I played it for quite a while with no problems, so hopefully it's all good. This will hopefully make it a lot easier to try this game out.

Can we protest and get the review redone by someone at least middle ground? Sounds like the reviewer wanted to just rail the game. Is it great, nope, but its a very good game and I have fond memories of the game.

The only thing more annoying than the review is the people complaining about the review. Who knew that people could be so offended by someone being offended- I assume you all have to cut your eyes out for reading it.

Cringe fake outrage woke review but decent game for anyone who understands satire and doesn't have a stick up thier ass.

The reviewer ought to have some sweetener in their life because it's awfully bitter. It's just a fun easy click and drag adventure that you're supposed to finish in 2-3 hours.

And about the review on the game. The reviewer has a right to an opinion and I would appreciate respect on that regard. The game is called Leather Goddesses of Phobos and as history states, they have a sexual streak to where the religions pertaining to their worship has as a tradition the priestesses holding rituals where sexual relations are performed with the worshippers, so the game is according to the theme and it's correct. There's nothing inappropriate about the game.

OK real quick. I just unzipped everything into a directory and ran the setup file and it
automatically installed to the default directory without having to mount anything

300 baud. You don't know anything about it. An entire generation of frustrated sycophants. I had 300 bad when I was a kid and I was never impatient. We were grateful and look forward to every screen as it loaded 40 minutes at a time. Commodore 64s, 8086 is, risk processors. You don't know anything about anything. An entire generation of disposable people. An entire generation permanently attached to my coattails. Ack.

Yeah, I was surprised by the review. It seems harsh. The game was a satire on the old 50's sci- fi b grade movies. You could just as easily say alot of other infocom games were lame. But there not. It was a very early point and click graphic game.

Lol @ the review. I'll never understand how some people get so upset at pixelized t&a.

Two things I see people having issues with this game:
1) There is an English version and a French version, those are not download sites they represent the language version so pick the British Flag.
2) Pawn's post is how you have to load the game, the reason being the 10 zipped folders represent old 5.25" floppy's based on how the game was originally installed. I struggled a little with how Pawn stated it but he is correct, also I thought the command was -t space and floppy and it would not work. Using -tfloppy with no space it loaded just fine. I can say the fact the site does not have any detail on how to load it seems odd, but maybe its somewhere I overlooked. I have barely started the game but loved the way the game looked and old school DOS Babes remind me of BBS days.

Amazing, no matter when or where you go you can't escape loathing and contempt of anything sexual. That review was absolutely overflowing with thick layers of elitism and scorn.

The play in browser version is only in French. I don't see a way to change that.

If using DOSBox... unzip all the ZIP files into one directory. The last zip file will complain and ask if you want to replace DISK.ID and INSTALL.DAT. I said NO.

Then in dosbox, mount a C: drive *AND* mount the directory you unzipped the files into as your A: drive with -t floppy. e.g. if you unzipped it into C:\TMPDIR:

MOUNT C C:\DOSROOT
MOUNT A C:\TMPDIR -t floppy
A:
INSTALL.EXE

When it asks for the next disk, just press Y

@I C. Wiener probably because you downloaded the French version.

I played this a lot in my day. Mainly because the babes were doslicious. Used up so much toilet paper my parents wondered if I was okay.

Again, I have unzipped the files, there is a loader. The loader says there is a problem, that my hard drive maybe damaged. I know my hard drive is fine not, but I can not get the game to work. Mac Computer using DosBox or Boxer. Anyone out there get this game to work?

KC 19 Nov. 2019

I have downloaded the DOS version. In that file are 6 zip files. I can unzip them, but how do I get these into a game? I am using Boxer on a Mac.

infocom and commercial interactive fiction were pretty much dead at this point - ironically too dead by mainstream graphics-whoring. This is actually Activision silliness under their purchased infocom label.

there were always 4 main ways to grab a players into adventure gaming rather than repetitive arcade combat: story, puzzles, jokes and lewd content. this seems to have pushed too far in the latter
