Made by EA, Electronics Arts, in 1997 this was an upgrade to the original Need for Speed and second in the NFS franchise that’s still in existence today.
Originally made for a Pentium 90 Mhz, 20 Mb (yes megabyte not gigabyte!) and good old Windows 95, this was a great upgrade to the original now with 3Dfx. Better graphics and better racing. It’s really fast and adds four cars to the original eight and one extra track to the original seven. Yeah I know today’s games have multiple tracks and an incredible amount of cars, I’ve played Forza and Grand Turismo and numerous other racing games, but remember it was 1997. Space was expensive. Now-a-days you can get 8 Gb for five bucks but back then a gigabyte was upwards of around $180! I still love the way it controls. I’ve always liked NFS for its control and NFS II SE is no different.
The graphics are really great and better than the original NFS II, they improved the software graphics for NFS II SE and added the 3Dfx for the 3Dfx Voodoo cards to further improve graphics. Edges are more rounded with 3Dfx, cleaner than the “jaggies” you used to see in some games without the graphics upgrade. “Jaggies” were the saw blade edges you’d see on games with lower graphics, think PS1. Sound is OK, not fantastic but OK. Not something I worry about in NFS too much.
Overall I love the NFS series and I think that NFS II SE is a great addition to the series. Hope that you enjoy it and can collect the entire series.

(Tbh, I was not even sure if this was real for a while). I was scared my mom even told me off the PC after like 10 mins playing with the game like that, since she thought I "broke the PC". Acabei de disponibilizar uma tradução para português brasileiro do clássico Need for Speed II SE (1997)
A tradução inclui menus, configurações e textos do jogo. A instalação é bem simples: basta fazer um backup do arquivo `text.eng` original e substituí-lo pelo arquivo traduzido na pasta principal do jogo.
O projeto é gratuito, de código aberto e também disponibiliza um CSV editável e ferramentas para quem quiser personalizar as traduções.

I managed to run the game ok, but I do have the "crackling sound" issue. I have placed the files dsound.dll and dsound.vxd into the game folder and still the issue persists. Is these anything else I have to do?

In game menue sounds clip and distorted. Racing sounds effects and play run fine. Got the game running on windows 11 following the prescribed stepps.
@John - How did you run the game? And in which mode (software - nfs2sen or 3dfx - nfs2sea)? Did you mean x86 Win10 (which is likely to handle NFS II Se) or x64? Did your records and settings save? Do you have any ideas how to solve the issues in the comment I wrote on Mar 26?
game works well on windows 10
The game doesn't work well when you either install it manually (by copying the game files from CD) or use a 3rd party installer (uploaded here). I went the 2nd way: install with a 3rd party x64 *.exe.
The software mode (nfs2sen.sxe) won't work without dgvoodoo. The accelerated mode (nfs2sea.exe) doesn't have a cockpit view. I applied the directsound fix (available here) so the sound doesn't sound ill, I applied both *.sdb files (3d & no 3d), but there's another serious problem: the settings don't save. Try to beat any record (or at least get a top10 total time for any course) and enter your name, you'll get an error "save failed". The options don't save either (I lose controls, speed units and other. Sdb file administration doesn't work). There's also 1 more bug: delayed sound. I tested NFS II SE in software mode. I couldn't test the 3dfx exe if the non-3dfx barely works...
Tested on: Windows 10 home x64.
Does anyone else experience these bugs I described here? I couldn't find my solution ANYWHERE. Does anyone know how to make the game save records and options?

If you face colour issue in the game, follow these 4 simple steps:
1. Make a txt file on your desktop and name it 'NFS2SEN'
2. Open the file and type this : (Without the colon)
taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe
NFS2SEN.exe
start explorer.exe
3. Now Click on the File menu and click on 'Save As' option.
4. You will see the Save as dialog box. Type .bat after the file name (meaning we are saving the file as .bat extension) and save the file in your original game directory.
5. Now you will not face the colour issue.
this is my favorite game when I was Kid. I always play this game with my father. and now, I can play this game, I can buy my own computer, but not with the memories with my father.
I got it to work. I can even play with my xbox controller thanks to the silent patch. Only thing that still does not work is saving lap records, settings or anything. Not sure why yet. always get the error saving failed.

Great game, not perfect w/ modern xbox/dualshock controller but it's to be expected. This game was designed for the '90s microsoft sidewinder gamepad. A and B was the gas and brake, L and R were downshift and upshift. The D-pad was how you steer.
Ignore the tutorial myabandonware gives you, it's outdated. That said,
Install steps for Windows 10/11 in 2024:
1. Follow the link N-GNE posted down below, download the .zip and extract it somewhere. This Need for Speed II SE folder will be your game directory.
2. ensure virtual clonedrive is installed, download and install it if not
3. Download the disc image from here (570mb one for english speakers). Do not download the LGU Repack by Bladez1992 (466mb) because it's popping up red for malware.
4. extract the .zip to a folder, right click the .bin and mount it via virtual clonedrive
5. Ignore any autorun nonsense, open the drive and copy the folders "FEDATA" and "GAMEDATA" and paste them into the game directory you got in step 1.
6. Use nfs2se.exe in the game directory to run the game.
Note: Use common sense when downloading stuff on the internet. If it runs or can run, virus scan it w/ windows defender at least. Some of you need to hear this.

I can't explain to you in words what this game means to me. I spent my so much time in childhood playing it. Today, after 23 years I've found a playable version of it on modern windows PC! Ah! This gives me chills: And the McLaren F1 wins.
So does the repacked LGU version contain all the necessary patches too, or do we still need to apply these manually?

I had this game back in 2003-4 sometime. It actually worked with Lan. (I had another old windows 98 pc as well). Then it stopped working for some reason, (maybe I had forgotten how to set it up properly?) I personally got into the GTA games by then so it wasn't so bad for me.

followed N-GNE Instructions for 1st time setup.. Everything works except for 1 issue.
the frame rate is through the roof which is fine except for odd hiccups. Having had played the game when it first came out i can say its running a bit faster than usual and i think this is what accounts for the minor spike lags its akin to skipping a frame. anyone know how to framelock it?
EDIT: couldnt framelock it.
but by editing open_config.bat
forcing single cpu and vysync reduced the mini spikes...
the open config also allowed me to set screen size etc.

the windows x64 installer works good with 3dfx version of the game on windows 10, my question though, has there ever been a way to mod the dashboards into the nfs2sea version of the game? I can't get the software rendered version of the game to work for me at all!!

I remember finding this at one of those app stores where you could buy or exchange used DOS-ROMs like this or Sega System and Atari apps. I instantly fell in love with Need for Speed II: SE Windows, it reminds me so much of Space Harrier, but as a 3D beltscroller with wheels.

Confirmed! It's working on my win 10 Pro 64bit, OS build (19041.450).
How to do it?
--------------------
Insert CD into your drive (mount ISO file);
Create a folder (there when You wish to have installed Need for Speed II SE) in my case is E:\Need for Speed II SE;
Copy 2 folders from CD (mouted ISO) "FEDATA" and "GAMEDATA" into folder what you just created;
Go to https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mUjVgjxm9bccoCJg0SqiMDhM4gNfdBRo?usp=sharing and download file called "nfs2se-win32.zip" and unzip it in to the folder which you created (Need for Speed II SE) You'll be asked to replace the files click yes to all of them;
Than navigate to folder "Need for Speed II SE" and create shortcut into desktop from file "nfs2se.exe" for faster access;
Enjoy the game!

By the way if you have PS4/XBox controller it be also works perfectly with the game.
Warning!
This method works only with Need for Speed II SE and will not work with earlier part Need for Speed II. If you'll try to do it same steps with NFSII you will get warning message "MOVIE FILE NOT FOUND"
