Strike Aces

DOS - 1989
Also available on: Amiga - Amstrad CPC - Commodore 64 - ZX Spectrum

Fighter Bomber (or Strike Aces in the US) is a fun but very challenging "recreational" flight-sim set in a bombing competition inspired by Gen. Curtis LeMay's training events.

You can fly 6 of the world's most popular aircrafts including the F4 Phantom, F15E Strike Eagle, F111 Aardvark, Mig 27, RAF and Luftwaffe Tornado, and Saab Viggen. Mid-air refuelling is available, but very difficult. Realism is dubious, but the emphasis is clearly on playability rather than historical accuracy. Handling and control for each plane is distinctive enough to convey the aircraft's peculiarities, without too much detail as to confuse novice players.

Graphics in the game is excellent for its time, with many famous US landmarks (e.g. Mount Rushmore) to liven up dogfights. Not that you'll have time to enjoy the view, though-- Fighter Bomber is a difficult game: be prepared to get shot down by enemies that sneak up from nowhere, even in the early missions. This makes the game playable only to flight sim experts, although anyone with enough patience will be able to enjoy the great gameplay after getting the hang of the basics.

Overall, this is a nice update of sorts to Accolade's earlier stunt sim Blue Angels, with many more options and good enemy AI. Recommended!

Great Game, Download is working, but the mission 11 is broken in this version, when u destroy the bridges, they don´t count as missiontargets and u fail the mission.

from what i can tell the version of Fighter bomber that you can get at old-games.com does contain the missions possibly, at least when i try the first sleeper mission it plays and i am not throwan back to the start menu - the rest of the missions may unlock as you complete them in order

i do however have a copy of fighter bomber and all the missions - bascially i just had to copy the files from disk to hdd and they are all there now - i would be happy to make my game folder available here, how do i do that?

It was a nice simulator, at the time others were tecnically superior already but the possibility to fly an F-111, a Tornado, a Saab Viggen and and Mig-27 made it unique among the ones available at the time.

It was a great purchase, you won't regret downloading it and giving it a try.

Yeah the hidden files didn't make it... But good news (I hope). I still have my original install disks and the copy we made with a modified port of Rawcopy when I was a freshman at University of Kansas. I loved this game and my friends hated it; generally offering the reason "its too hard," or "Its impossible. I will say that it was one of the most difficult combat flight-sims I have ever played. Going to go see my mother for thanksgiving, and I'm pretty sure Strike Aces is still in her attic with my other 5 1/4 floppies. I have, in that same box, Harpoon 1.0, Jetfighter the adventure, Speedball 2, F16-combat pilot ega, Hitchhiker's Guide, and dig this... I have the first c-64 release of Ultima 1 there too on 5 1/4 single sided for the old 1541 drive. Will grab it all and post it here once I get it home. I think Im going to grab my old pong machine while I'm at it, and my cheech wizard comics. Thanks for reminding me guys; I hadn't even thought about strike aces in so long.

The game's missions were hidden-files. Therefore they are not included as they were not copied.

Good flight simulation, lot of planes and good playability.
